  1. 11. Developmental neurotoxicity of persistent and non-persistent pollutants : Behavioral and neurochemical assessments of a perfluorinated compound, pesticides and interaction effects

    Author : Iwa Lee; Henrik Viberg; Per Eriksson; William Mundy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Brain; Neonatal; Mixtures; Cholinergic system; Organochlorines; Pyrethroids; Organophosphates; Carbamates; Insecticides; PFCs; PFAAs; PFHxS; Endosulfan; Cypermethrin; Chlorpyrifos; Carbaryl; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis was to investigate developmental neurotoxic effects of different persistent and non-persistent environmental pollutants, alone or in binary mixtures, when exposure occurs during a critical period of brain development, in mice. The compounds investigated included a perfluorinated compound, perfluorohexane sulphonate (PFHxS), and four different pesticides, endosulfan, cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos and carbaryl. READ MORE

  2. 12. Cell models for evaluation of adult and developmental neurotoxicity : Focus on acrylamide

    Author : Kristina Attoff; Anna Forsby; Åsa Fex-Svenningsen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : This thesis is aimed at summarizing some of the alternative in vitro methods and models that have been used to study both adult and developmental neurotoxicity (DNT), and also to pinpoint some of the important aspects of using alternative in vitro methods. The aim of the papers included in this thesis was to challenge the hypothesis that neurotoxicity and DNT of chemicals can be studied using robust endpoints for proliferation and neural differentiation, such as neurite outgrowth, mRNA expression and protein expression, in two different cell lines. 3. 13. Neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y and neural progenitor C17.2 cell lines as models for neurotoxicological studies

    Author : Jessica Lundqvist; Anna Forsby; Åsa Fex Svenningsen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SH-SY5Y; C17.2; in vitro neurotoxicity; cell culture conditions; biomarkers; in vitro developmental neurotoxicity; whole genome microarray; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : We are surrounded by chemicals, thus understanding how exposure to these chemicals affect us during our life is of great social importance. In order to predict human acute toxicity of chemicals, cosmetics or drugs, development of novel in vitro test strategies is required. READ MORE

  5. 15. Neurodevelopmental Consequences of Exposure to Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) and Related Drugs : Experimental studies in mice

    Author : Gaëtan Philippot; Robert Fredriksson; Vesna Jevtovic-Todorovic; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; paracetamol acetaminophen ; developmental neurotoxicology; delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol THC ; ibuprofen; endocannabinoid system; neonatal mice; brain growth spurt; behavior; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Abstract : Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is the analgesic pharmaceutical most commonly used during pregnancy and early life. While therapeutic doses of paracetamol are considered harmless during these periods, recent findings in both humans and rodents suggest a link between developmental exposure to paracetamol and behavioral consequences later in life.
