  1. 1. Interaction between biomaterials and innate immunity with clinical implications

    Author : Shan Huang; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Charlotte Dahle; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Complement system; contact system; blood; biomaterials; biocompatibility; in vitro screening; iC3; dialysis;

    Abstract : Today there is an increasing clinical demand and expectation of patients for biomaterials, which underscores the importance of discovering the correlations between biomaterials and biological systems, especially blood. When an artificial material makes contact with blood, the first event is a rapid adsorption of plasma protein on the material surface, on top of which the innate immune system is triggered, with potentially detrimental consequences. 2. 2. Dialysis initiation and clinical outcomes in chronic kidney disease : role of education and biomarkers

    Author : Anna Machowska; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : For patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who develop kidney failure, renal replacement therapy (RRT) with kidney transplantation is the best treatment option. But if this is not possible due to lack of organs or medical factors, dialysis initiation with haemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) is required. READ MORE

  3. 3. Impact of peritoneal solute transport rate on nutritional status and clinical outcome in peritoneal dialysis patients

    Author : Sung Hee Chung; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adequacy of dialysis; comorbid diseases; fluid removal; inflammation; mortality; malnutrition; peritoneal dialysis; peritoneal solute transport rate; residual renal function.;

    Abstract : The transport characteristics of the peritoneal membrane may be influenced by inflammation and various comorbid diseases (CMD) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. On the other hand, the peritoneal solute transport rate (PSTR) may influence patient characteristics such as nutritional status as well as the clinical outcome of PD patients. READ MORE

  4. 4. Prognosis and progression in chronic kidney disease

    Author : Marie Evans; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Analgesics; Chronic Kidney Disease; Epidemiology; Dialysis; Glomerular Filtration Rate; Lead Metal Exposure; Survival;

    Abstract : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a life threatening condition with high risk of pre-term death and need for dialysis. The population prevalence of CKD has been estimated to 10-13% for both Europe and the USA. READ MORE

  5. 5. Implications of chronic kidney disease on presentation, treatment and outcomes in patients with aortic stenosis

    Author : Georgios Vavilis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease in the western world. No pharmacological treatment has been proved to halt the progression to severe disease and after symptom debut, the prognosis is poor with a high mortality, if left untreated. READ MORE
