  2. 2. On the ecophysiology of Baltic cyanobacteria focusing on bottom-up factors

    Author : Malin Mohlin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Allelopathy; Aphanizomenon sp.; Baltic Sea; Cyanobacteria; Diazotrophic; Multi-factorial; Nitrogen; Nodularin; photosynthetic active radiation; Phosphorus; ultraviolet radiation; UV-A; UV-B;

    Abstract : Cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea are dominated by diazotrophic cyanobacteria, i.e. Aphanizomenon sp. and Nodularia spumigena. READ MORE

  3. 3. Environmental conditions governing the distributions of symbiotic and free-living diazotrophic cyanobacteria in two tropical open oceans

    Author : Marcus Stenegren; Rachel Foster; Bethany Jenkins; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen fixation; Diazotroph; Cyanobacteria; Symbiosis; DDA; Richelia; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Di-nitrogen (N2) fixation plays a crucial role in oceanic carbon and nitrogen cycles and is important for marine biogeochemistry on regional and global scales. N2-fixing (diazotrophs) cyanobacteria are considered to contribute the most to marine nitrogen fixation, and thereby fuel the surrounding phytoplankton communities with bioavailable ammonia. 4. 4. Towards an understanding of diazocyte development and diazotrophy in the marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium

    Author : Gustaf Sandh; Birgitta Bergman; Rehab El-Shehawy; Louis Sherman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cyanobacteria; Trichodesmium; diazocyte; cell differentiation; nitrogen fixation; cell division; flavodoxin; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology; växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Trichodesmium is a filamentous cyanobacterium of great ecological significance as it contributes significantly to primary production in oceans through an efficient nitrogen fixation strategy, including a unique cell type, the diazocyte. The aim of this thesis was to generate a deeper understanding of the structural and molecular background related to the development of diazocytes and the maintenance of diazotrophy in Trichodesmium erythraeum IMS101. 5. 5. Filamentous cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea - spatiotemporal patterns and nitrogen fixation

    Author : Lisa Almesjö; Ragnar Elmgren; Norbert Wasmund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Aphanizomenon sp.; Nodularia spumigena; Baltic Sea; image analysis; spatial variability; nitrogen fixation; vertical migration; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : Summer blooms of filamentous, diazotrophic cyanobacteria are typical of the Baltic Sea Proper, and are dominated by Aphanizomenon sp. and the toxic Nodularia spumigena. Although occurring every summer, the blooms vary greatly in timing and spatial distribution, making monitoring difficult and imprecise. READ MORE
