  1. 11. Dietary inorganic nitrate : role in exercise physiology, cardiovascular and metabolic regulation

    Author : Filip J. Larsen; Jon Lundberg; Eddie Weitzberg; Björn Ekblom; Victor M Darley-Usmar; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule with a vast number of tasks in the body, including regulation of cardiovascular and metabolic function. A decreased bioavailability of NO is a central event in disorders such as hypertension and metabolic syndrome. READ MORE

  2. 12. Multiplex HLA-DR-DQ genotyping : for genetic epidemiology and clinical risk assessment

    Author : Ewa Lavant; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : HLA-DRB1; HLA-DQB1; HLA-DQA1; PCR-SSP; type 1 diabetes; celiac disease; autoimmune disease; capillary gel electrophoresis; genotyping;

    Abstract : The human leukocyte antigens (HLA) are highly polymorphic cell surface proteins encoded in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region on chromosome 6. The HLA system has been well known as transplantation antigens but the primary biological role of the HLA molecules is regulation of immune response by presenting peptide fragments to T-lymphocytes. 3. 13. Web-based studies of lifestyle factors and immune function

    Author : Elinor Fondell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), is estimated to cost $40 billion per year in the US, not including the cost of influenza, and is the most common reason for seeking primary care in many countries. Despite this, little is known about how to decrease susceptibility. READ MORE

  4. 14. The environmental pressures of foods : Application in climate taxation and sustainability assessment of diets

    Author : Emma Moberg; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Reducing environmental impacts from the food system will require a shift towards environmentally sustainable eating patterns. To achieve changes in diets that reduce environmental burdens, a climate tax on food has been suggested. READ MORE

  5. 15. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp

    Author : Lars Pettersson; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Benefits; Costs; Predation; Chemical cues; Fish; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong.
