  1. 16. Interplay Between Environment and Genes on Morphological Variation in Perch – Implications for Resource Polymorphisms

    Author : Jens Olsson; Peter Eklöv; Mats Björklund; Richard Svanbäck; Andrew P. Hendry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Ecology; Perch; Resource polymorphism; Genetic differentiation; Phenotypic plasticity; Morphology; Competition; Character divergence; Behavior; Growth rate; Resource level; Gut lenght; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Recent research has suggested that individual specialization within populations could be substantial and more common than previously acknowledged. Eurasian perch is one of many species of fish in lakes of postglacial origin that displays a morphological and dietary variation tightly coupled to the littoral and pelagic habitats of the lake. 2. 17. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 3. 18. Evaluation of locally available feed resources for striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)

    Author : Chau Thi Da; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis investigated and compared inputs and outputs, economic factors and current feed use in small-scale farming systems producing striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) in the Mekong Delta. The nutrient content of locally available natural feed resources for striped catfish was determined and growth performance, feed utilisation and body indices were analysed in pond-cultured striped catfish fed diets where fish meal protein was replaced with protein from local feed resources. 4. 19. Online health promoting communities : Design, implementation and formative evaluation of an intervention

    Author : Joakim Ekberg; Toomas Timpka; Nils Dahlbäck; Henrik Eriksson; Sven Bremberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In Sweden, obesity among children has not yet reached the epidemic proportions reported from other parts of the world. However, among adolescents, being overweight and self-consciousness regarding body shape, diet and exercise influence social, psychological and physical health. READ MORE

  5. 20. Motivating clinical treatment of obesity : methods, education, supervision and outcome

    Abstract : Obesity has become an important health problem worldwide. It increases the medical risks and affects daily living. Environmental factors such as diet and sedentary lifestyle are likely to be the cause. In Sweden, the number of obese people has nearly doubled during the past 20 years and now totals nearly 500 000.
