1. Conctraction-mediating receptors in human peripheral vessels with special reference to veins and lymphatics
Abstract : By means of a myograph, postjunctional alpha-adrenoceptors were characterized in human superficial epigastric arteries and veins obtained from health subjects. The rank order of potency of subtype selective agonists could not be used for receptor characterization in these vessels, whereas antagonists gave distinct results. READ MORE

2. Renal dysfunction and protection in cardiovascular surgery
Abstract : Purpose: This thesis is focused on studies of postoperative renal dysfunction (PRD), and on renal effects and possible prophylactic potentials of three vasoactive substances, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and the calcium channel antagonist diltiazem. Methods: In paper I the medical records of 1 030 consecutive cardiothoracic surgery patients were evaluated and glomerular filtration calculated from serum creatinine levels. READ MORE

3. Metabolic drug interactions in man : methodological aspects on in vivo studies
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate methodological aspects on in vivo metabolic drug interaction studies in man. Five pharmacokinetic studies in healthy persons or patients are presented. Together, they represent a set of model studies to evaluate the occurrence of, and extent of metabolic drug interactions in vivo. READ MORE

4. The relationship between reduced renal function and cardiovascular disease
Abstract : This thesis examines the relationship between measures of renal function and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with hypertension (the NORDIL study) and in the healthy population (Malmö Diet and Cancer Study, MDC) and whether antihypertensive treatment response and the risk of CVD is affected by genetic variation of a regulator of the renal amiloroide sensitive sodium channel (NORDIL). In study 1 we tested creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with Cockroft-Gault (CG) and the MDRD equations and also microalbuminuria (MA) as predictors of CVD, stroke and CVD death. 5. Factors influencing outcome in patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - Effects of pharmacotherapy, pacing and surgical myectomy
Abstract : Background: Most studies on risk factors for disease-related mortality in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) have emanated from specialized tertiary centres which are subject to possible referral bias. About one quarter of HCM-patients have outflow obstruction in the left ventricle, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). READ MORE
