11. LL-37-derived cyclic antimicrobial drug leads : Design, synthesis, activity and different ways of creating them
Abstract : In an era where last-line antibiotics are failing, one of the powerful approaches to develop novel therapeutic agents is to turn back to nature in order to identify possible drug candidates. Among the potential candidates, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have garnered much attention as an antimicrobial. READ MORE

12. Synthesis of Oligosaccharides for Interaction Studies with Various Lectins
Abstract : In this thesis, the syntheses of oligosaccharides for interaction studies with various lectins are described. The first section reports the syntheses of tetra, tri- and disaccharides corresponding to truncated versions of the glucosylated arm of Glc1Man9(GlcNAc)2, found in the biosynthesis of N-glycans. 13. Roughening in dimer models : Random matrix statistics and surface fluctuations
Abstract : The field of mathematical statistical mechanics sits at the intersection of probability theory and mathematical physics. It consists of the rigorous analysis of models in statistical mechanics, such as dimer and lattice models - of which the Ising model is a classical example. READ MORE

14. Molecular Mechanisms in Amyloid Disorders. Novel Treatment Options in Hereditary Cystatin C Amyloid Angiopathy
Abstract : The pathophysiological process in Alzheimer’s disease and other amyloid disorders usually involves the transformation of a soluble monomeric protein via potentially toxic oligomers into amyloid fibrils. The structure and properties of the intermediary oligomers have been difficult to study due to their instability and dynamic equilibrium with smaller and larger species. READ MORE

15. Domain swapping as a molecular mechanism in amyloidosis
Abstract : Amyloidosis is a group of diseases characterized by a change in protein conformation resulting in aggregation and tissue deposition of amyloid fibrils. One variant of cystatin C, L68Q cystatin C, is highly amyloidogenic and persons carrying the corresponding gene suffer from massive cerebral amyloidosis leading to brain hemorrhage and death.
