    Abstract : The sequence commentary emerged as a new branch of medieval commentary literature in the twelfth century. The sequence itself, sung in the Roman Mass, was a hugely influential genre—several thousands of sequence texts are known today—but the fact that the Middle Ages also produced commentaries on this liturgical poetry has been hitherto practically unknown and very few commentary texts have been edited. The purpose is to show that Pearl and the works of Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe, Walter Hilton, Richard Rolle and the author of The Cloud of Unknowing share a concern with attempting to express the inexpressible.     Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the Romanian Orthodox poet, director of the journal G�ndirea, and theologian, Nichifor Crainic (1889-1972), and with the two over-arching ecclesiological themes in his writings between 1922 and 1944 ? the pancosmic Church and specificul rom�nesc (the particularity of Romanian identity). Though these are fundamentally related to each other, there are many tensions between them, as the relationship between local and particular identity and pancosmic universality is worked out against the complex political backdrop of 20-th century Romania.
