  1. 1. Dispersion Engineering : Negative Refraction and Designed Surface Plasmons in Periodic Structures

    Author : Zhichao Ruan; Min Qiu; Henri Benisty; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; photonic crystal; dispersion property; negative refraction; surface plasmon polariton; designed surface plasmon; negative index material; layer-KKR method; finite-difference time-domain method; plane wave method; subwavelength imaging; open cavity; enhanced transmission; slowing light; Photonics; Fotonik;

    Abstract : The dispersion property of periodic structures is a hot research topic in the last decade. By exploiting dispersion properties, one can manipulate the propagation of electromagnetic waves, and produce effects that do not exist in conventional materials. READ MORE

  2. 2. Waves in space plasmas : Lower hybrid cavities and simple-pole distribution functions

    Author : Anders Tjulin; Mats André; Hans Pécseli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; space physics; plasma; waves; dispersion relations; lower hybrid cavities; Cluster; magnetosphere; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : Waves are a fundamental feature in many parts of physics, since they transport energy without transporting matter. This is the case also in space physics. Waves are responsible for energy transport both between different parts of space and between different particles in the space plasma. READ MORE

  3. 3. Steady waves in local and nonlocal models for water waves

    Author : Tien Truong; Matematik (naturvetenskapliga fakulteten); []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; The steady Euler equations; the Whitham equation; solitary waves; highest waves; periodic waves; transverse dynamics; The steady Euler equations; the Whitham equation; solitary waves; highest waves; periodic waves; transverse dynamics;

    Abstract : We study the steady Euler equations for inviscid, incompressible, and irrotational water waves of constant density. The thesis consists of three papers. The first paper approaches the Euler equations through a famous nonlocal model equation for gravity waves, namely the Whitham equation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ultrasonic Arrays for Sensing and Beamforming of Lamb Waves

    Author : Marcus Engholm; Tadeusz Stepinski; Paul D. Wilcox; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; imaging; array processing; guided waves; Lamb waves; dispersive waves; multi-modal waves; spatial filtering; mode suppression; resonant ultrasound; transducer design; direction of arrival estimation; adaptive beamforming; Signal processing; Signalbehandling; Electronic measurement and instrumentation; Elektronisk mät- och apparatteknik;

    Abstract : Non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques are critical to ensure integrity and safety of engineered structures. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is considered as the next step in the field enabling continuous monitoring of structures. READ MORE

  5. 5. Potential Flow Panel Methods for the Calculation of Free-surface Flows with Lift

    Author : Carl-Erik Janson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; desingularized; shape optimization; Rankine source; waves; OCTOPUS; dipole; MMA; Dawson operator; boundary layer; vortex; Method of Moving Asymptotes; nonlinear; sailing yacht; four point operator; surface piercing wing; Navier-Stokes; numerical method; lift force; raised panel method; discrete Fourier transform; collocation point shift; potential flow; CFD; free surface; induced drag; SHIPFLOW; dispersion; damping; analytical method; hydrofoil;

    Abstract : Two non-linear Rankine-source panel methods are developed and implemented in the same computer code. The first method uses a four-point upwind operator on the free-surface to compute the velocity derivatives and to enforce the radiation condition while the second method uses an analytical expression for the velocity derivatives and a collocation point shift one panel upstream to prevent upstream waves.
