  1. 21. An Optimisation Approach to Cartographic Generalisation

    Author : Lars Harrie; Centrum för geografiska informationssystem (GIS-centrum); []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; incremental generalisation; multiple representation; least-squares method; optimisation; cartographic constraints; displacement; cartographic generalisation; graphic generalisation; map production; object-oriented spatial databases; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; Technological sciences; Teknik;

    Abstract : Cartographic generalisation is the process of simplifying a representation to suit the scale and purpose of a map. As such, generalisation has always been a central part in map production. This thesis is a contribution to the ongoing work on automating cartographic generalisation. READ MORE

  2. 22. Generalisation Methods for Propagating Updates between Cartographic Data Sets

    Author : Lars Harrie; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multiple representation database; automated cartographic generalisation; incremental generalisation; displacement; cartographic constraints; object-oriented database;

    Abstract : Automation is increasingly important in producing and maintaining cartographic data sets. This thesis deals with automatic methods to propagate updates between cartographic data sets. READ MORE

  3. 23. For every word has its own shadow: Sunsets, Notes From Underground, Waves

    Author : Lisa Tan; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; affect; becoming; Maurice Blanchot; displacement; dispossession; essay film; experimental video; geological time; liminal; Clarice Lispector; materialism; primordial obscurity; provisional; solitude; Susan Sontag; threshold; transformation; translation; video; video installation; Virginia Woolf;

    Abstract : Liminality permeates this doctoral project's questions: how can an experience of the liminal exist as an artwork? What things and experiences can orient us towards affectivity and states of becoming? Lisa Tan relates such concerns to Clarice Lispector whose writing renders becoming(s) visible. Coupled with Maurice Blanchot and his literary discourse on dispossession and the outside (analogous to becoming), Tan's inquiry is critically engaged inside a moving image practice. READ MORE

  4. 24. Multiphase Contamination in Rock Fractures : Fluid Displacement and Interphase Mass Transfer

    Author : Zhibing Yang; Auli Niemi; Fritjof Fagerlund; Tissa Illangasekare; Insa Neuweiler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multiphase flow; dissolution; mass transfer; invasion percolation; immiscible displacement; fractured media; groundwater contamination; non-aqueous phase liquid; curvature; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Abstract : Multiphase flow and transport in fractured rock is of importance to many practical and engineering applications. In the field of groundwater hydrology an issue of significant environmental concern is the release of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) which can cause long-term groundwater contamination in fractured aquifers. 5. 25. Multiple Affiliations : Memory and Place in Autobiographical Narratives of Displacement by (Im)migrant US Women

    Author : Lena Karlsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; autobiography; im migration; United States; diaspora; locational feminism; history; memory; place; home displacement; body; postmodern; subjectivity;

    Abstract : Multiple Affiliations explores the autobiographical negotiations of memory and multilocality articulated by five (im)migrant women writers writing from, and being read (primarily) within, the US. Texts as diverse as Korean-American Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's Dictée (1982), Polish (Jewish)-American Eva Hoffman's Lost in Translation: Life in a New Language (1989), Chinese-American Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts (1976) and China Men (1980), Caribbean/African-American Audre Lorde's Zami: A New Spelling of My Name (1982), and Pakistani-American Sara Suleri's Meatless Days (1989) highlight how various (cross-race and transnational) experiences of location, dislocation, and relocation resonate with each other and "immigrant America.
