  1. 21. Development and regulation of alveolar fluid clearance in the guinea pig

    Author : Andreas Norlin; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxytocin-induced preterm labor; IRDS; fetal lung fluid; preterm lung development; amiloride-sensitive sodium channels; beta-adrenergic stimulation; alveolar epithelium; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : Alveolar fluid clearance is driven by active absorption of Na+ across the alveolar epithelium. Development and hormonal regulation of alveolar fluid clearance over 1 hour was studied by instillation of a protein-containing, isosmolar fluid into lungs of fetal, newborn, and adult guinea pigs. 3. 23. Odour detection in the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria: antennal structure and function

    Author : Samuel Adhola Ochieng'; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect antennae; Olfaction; chemoreceptors; receptor neuron; electrophysiology; aggregation pheromone; SEM; TEM; Djurfysiologi; Animal physiology; Animal ethology and psychology; Djurs etologi och psykologi;

    Abstract : The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, is a polymorphic insect that occurs in two morphological and physiological distinct phases, solitary and gregarious, depending on population density. The two phases are reversible at any developmental stage. The gregarious phase produces and uses stage-specific pheromones, that keep the swarm together. READ MORE

  4. 24. Developmental and methodological aspects of intestinal and pancreatic function in pigs and rats

    Author : Klas Rådberg; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; macromolecule; endocytosis; FITC-dextran; secretion; mucosa; CCK; pancreas; disaccharidase; intestinal permeability; lectin; morphometry; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to effectively absorb nutrients and to act as a safety barrier against hazardous substances in the environment. After birth these functions develops gradually. READ MORE

  5. 25. The human diving response : effects of temperature and training

    Author : Erika Schagatay; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Djurfysiologi; pig; human; training; breath-holding time; breaking point; cold-receptors; arterial blood; vasoconstriction; bradycardia; diving reflex; diving response; Breath-hold diving; Animal physiology; simulated diving; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Sports; Idrott; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The aim was to elucidate the cardiovascular response associated with breath-hold diving, especially the effects of temperature in its elicitation and the effects of different types of training on the human diving response (DR) and breath-holding time (BHT), and to evaluate the human DR in a mammalian perspective. A model for simulated diving by apnea and facial immersion in cold water was developed. READ MORE
