  1. 1. Phase Phenomena in Polymer Networks : Empirical Studies on the Influence of Hydrophobicity, Charge Density and Crosslinks on Macroion-Induced Phase Transitions in Polyelectrolyte Gels

    Author : Martin Andersson; Per Hansson; Lennart Piculell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gel; microgel; microsphere; polystyrenesulfonate; polyacrylate; polyacrylicacid; DoTAB; DoTAC; CTAB; CTAC; network; polyelectrolyte; complex salt; self assembly; phase behaviour; hysteresis; thermodynamic; core-shell; lysozyme; cytochrome c; microscopy; micromanipulator; elastomer; elastic; protein; surfactant; phase behaviour; sorting; PHARMACY; FARMACI; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : The thesis concerns polyelectrolyte gels in contact with oppositely charged proteins and surfactant micelles, and includes of four papers (I-IV). In paper I confocal Raman spectroscopy was introduced as a method to trace micelles and investigate the structure of gel-surfactant complexes, in phase separated gel spheres. READ MORE

    Abstract : Surfactant self-assembly is an important phenomenon that occurs in a number of processes in our everyday life. It is important to understand the forces and parameters that control and influence the self-assembly, as this knowledge can be used both in order to design surfactant systems with desired properties and for creating model systems, for example for biological processes. 3. 3. Protein-Surfactant Interactions Phase Behaviour and Phase Structure

    Author : Anna Karin Morén; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phase equilibria; Protein-surfactant interactions; Gel; Precipitate; Solution; Lysozyme; b-lactoglobulin; Ovalbumin; Bovine serum albumin; Dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride; Sodium alkylsulphates; NMR; Cryo-TEM; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Protein-surfactant interactions in water are investigated by following the phase equilibria for protein-surfactant pairs whose constituents carry both opposite and the same sign of charge. The concentration ranges studied are: 0-20 wt% protein, 0-20 wt% surfactant, and 80-100 wt% water. READ MORE

    Abstract : It is predicted by the United Nations that by year 2030 the world will need at least 50 percent more food, 45 percent more energy and 30 percent more water. The emissions of carbon dioxide from combustion of fossil fuels and waste are also increasing. READ MORE
