  1. 1. Syndecan - Regulation and Function of its Glycosaminoglycan Chains

    Author : Anna S. Eriksson; Dorothe Spillmann; Catherine Merry; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heparan sulfate; chondroitin sulfate; integrin; cell motility; fibroblast growth factor signaling; pharyngeal cartilage; biosynthesis regulation; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : The cell surface is an active area where extracellular molecules meet their receptors and affect the cellular fate by inducing for example cell proliferation and adhesion. Syndecans and integrins are two transmembrane molecules that have been suggested to fine-tune these activities, possibly in cooperation. Syndecans are proteoglycans, i.e. READ MORE

  2. 2. Role of Heparan Sulfate Structure in FGF-Receptor Interactions and Signaling

    Author : Nadja Jastrebova; Dorothe Spillmann; Ulf Lindahl; John T. Gallagher; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; heparan sulfate; oligosaccharide; fibroblast growth factor; fibroblast growth factor signaling; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfate (HS) belongs to the glycosaminoglycan family of polysaccharides and is found attached to protein cores on cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix. The HS backbone consists of alternating hexuronic acid and glucosamine units and undergoes a number of modification reactions creating HS chains with alternating highly and low modified domains, where high degree of modification correlates with high negative charge. 3. 3. Design of Oligosaccharide Libraries to Characterize Heparan Sulfate – Protein Interactions

    Author : Sindhulakshmi Kurup; Dorothe Spillmann; Ulf Lindahl; Jacob Vandenborn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biochemistry; heparan sulfate; oligosaccharide; phage display antibodies; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Heparan sulfates (HSs) are a class of anionic carbohydrate chains found at cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix where they interact with a number of proteins. HS is characterized by extreme structural heterogeneity, and has been implicated in a number of biological phenomenon like embryogenesis, morphogen gradient formation and signalling of growth factors such as FGF, PDGF etc. READ MORE

  4. 4. Brittlestars Galactosaminoglycans and Tools to Study their Structure

    Author : Ramesh Babu Namburi; Dorothe Spillmann; Lena Kjellén; Ulf Lindahl; Clare Hughes; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chondroitin sulfate; Brittlestars; Gut bacteria; H. bizzozeronii; B.thetaiotaomicron; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Molecular Biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : In all living organisms, biological activities such as proper functioning and co-ordination of different organs will depend on different cells and molecular interactions. In some organisms the loss of functional organs or damage of organs can be lethal, whereas in others a special process called regeneration can retrieve lost organs. READ MORE

  5. 5. Galactosaminoglycans - Role in Brittlestar Limb Regeneration

    Author : Rashmi Ramachandra; Dorothe Spillmann; Barbara Mulloy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Chondroitin sulfate; Dermatan sulfate; Brittlestar; Regeneration;

    Abstract : Regeneration is, in simple terms, ‘to re-grow’ damaged or lost parts of the body (e.g. cells, tissues and organs) and is a natural phenomenon occurring throughout the life of an organism. The regenerative capacity varies in the animal kingdom. READ MORE
