1. Target and Laser Pulse Optimization for Laser-Driven Ion Acceleration
Abstract : The research presented in this thesis is primarily focused on experimental investigations of laser-driven ion acceleration from solid targets via the target normal sheath acceleration mechanism. In particular, ways of optimizing the absorption of the laser pulse energy by free plasma electrons in the target, or modifying the shape of the accelerating electron sheath were addressed. READ MORE

2. Silicone biomaterials obtained by plasma treatment and subsequent surface hydrosilylation
Abstract : The need for safe and functional implants has led to anincreased demand for improved biomaterials. The performance invivo depends on the interaction between the biologicalsurrounding and the surface of the material. READ MORE

3. Bayesian Inference for Microwave Diagnostics at Joint European Torus
Abstract : The major goal of this thesis is to perform Bayesian inference jointly for electron kinetic profiles, a toroidal magnetic field correction, diagnostic sensitivities, and wall reflection properties given noisy measurements of four microwave diagnostics at the tokamak JET. Besides the measurements, this kind of inference considers prior knowledge, like profile length-scales, to update objectively the information about the physics parameters. READ MORE

4. Instrumentation for energetic Neutral atom measurements at Mars, Venus and The Earth
Abstract : This thesis deals with the development and calibrations of sensors to measure energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) at Mars, Venus, and the Earth. ENAs are formed in charge exchange processes between energetic, singly--charged ions and a cold neutral gas. READ MORE

5. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry : fundamental studies
Abstract : Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is in focus in this thesis. Fundamental studies of ICP double focusing magnetic sector MS are presented, and some possible applications are discussed. READ MORE
