1. Risk factors for incident heart failure and atrial fibrillation in an elderly population : The role of cardiac conduction and heart rate variability
Abstract : Heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are epidemic diseases, frequently coexisting, sharing risk factors and conferring poor prognosis. Identification of individuals at high risk of HF and AF may enable early treatment and improve the prognosis. Reliable prediction models for daily clinical practice are lacking. READ MORE

2. Stochastic epidemics on random networks
Abstract : This thesis considers stochastic epidemic models for the spread of epidemics in structured populations. The asymptotic behaviour of the models is analysed by using branching process approximations. The thesis contains four manuscripts. READ MORE

3. Evaluation of the user-provider interface in malaria control programme : The case of Jepara District, Central Java Province, Indonesia
Abstract : Introduction: Early detection and case management remain the main strategies in malaria control programme (MCP) in a low endemic area such as in Java Island, Indonesia. These strategies require an understanding of the community’s care-seeking behaviour in relation to the various health services. READ MORE

5. Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses
Abstract : Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimulation, the preservation of CD4+ T and B cells, the conformation of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein complex (Env), and the evolution of Env during infection.
