  1. 6. Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Properties of Nonionic Surfactant Membranes

    Author : Thao Le; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lamellar; multilamellar vesicle; small-angle x-ray scattering SAXS ; small-angle neutron scattering SANS ; static light scattering SLS ; joule heating temperature jump JHTJ ; dynamic light scattering DLS ; Nonionic surfactants; sponge; elastic curvature energy; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : An extensive investigation of the multilamellar vesicles (La*), lamellar (La), and multiply connected sponge (L3) phase formed in surfactant systems is presented in this thesis. These membrane structures were studied using surfactant systems containing poly(oxyethylene) alkyl ethers, n-CnH2n+1(OCH2CH2) mOH, commonly abbreviated as CnEm. READ MORE

  2. 7. The Role of Molecular Heterogeneity in the Structural Dynamics of Aqueous Solutions

    Author : Sharon Berkowicz; Fivos Perakis; Giulio Monaco; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Water; Aqueous solutions; X-ray scattering; X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy; Dynamic light scattering; kemisk fysik; Chemical Physics;

    Abstract : The liquid-liquid critical point hypothesis suggests that liquid water exists in two liquid states with different local structures, so-called high- and low-density liquid (HDL, LDL). At ambient pressure water locally fluctuates between these two states, with the fluctuations becoming more pronounced as the liquid is supercooled. READ MORE

  3. 8. A scattering study of concentrated lens protein solutions and mixtures - Towards understanding the molecular origin of presbyopia

    Author : Saskia Bucciarelli; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; scattering; eye lens; presbyopia; dynamical arrest; crowding; proteins; dynamics; crystallins;

    Abstract : Healthy eye lenses are transparent and flexible, able to adapt shape in order to focus on far away and close-by objects. With age, however, this flexibility is lost, leading to a condition known as presbyopia. This vision disorder where close-by objects appear blurred commonly starts around the age of 40. READ MORE

  4. 9. Multimode resonant X-ray scattering of free molecules

    Author : Nina Ignatova; Victor Kimberg; Faris Gel’mukhanov; Sergey Polyutov; Hans Ågren; Piero Decleva; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; X-ray absorption spectroscopy; core-excited state; nuclear dynamic; wave-packet; resonant inelastic X-ray scattering; Franck-Condon; water; methanol; water isotopomer; pump-probe; quantum chemistry; ultrafast dissociation; Kemi; Chemistry; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on the role that nuclear dynamics plays in the formation of X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of multimode free molecules. A combined approach based on ab initio electronic structure methods and quantum nuclear wave packet dynamics is applied to two systems -- water and methanol in the gas phase. READ MORE

  5. 10. Dynamic local structural symmetries and luminescence properties of the yellow emitting phosphor Ce3+-doped Y3Al5O12

    Author : Yuan-Chih Lin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; free electron laser; neutron scattering; vibrational spectroscopy; phosphor; light emitting diode; luminescence; thermal quenching; garnet;

    Abstract : This thesis centers on investigations of the local structure and vibrational properties of the oxide garnet Y3Al5O12 (YAG), which when substituted with a few percent of the activator ion Ce3+ to replace Y3+ (Y3−xCexAl5O12, YAG:Ce3+) is one of the most important phosphors for solid state lighting. The study builds on a comprehensive analysis of the nature of the phonons and localized vibrational modes in YAG:Ce3+ and how these depend on the Ce3+ concentration and temperature and how they affect key optical properties, such as the intensity and frequency of the emitted light.
