1. Endothelial-leukocyte interactions
Abstract : This thesis describes early inflammatory responses involving interactions between leukocytes and the endothelial lining of the blood vessel wall. An adhesion molecule, E-selectin, which is upregulated on interleukin-1 activated endothelium, was found to mediate rolling between leukocytes and endothelial cells in vivo. READ MORE

2. On the role of mast cells in chemokine-induced leukocyte recruitment
Abstract : Leukocyte recruitment is considered to playa key role in numerous inflammatory diseases. Tissue accumulation of Jeukocytes is a multi-steps process comprising rolling, adhesion and transmigration. READ MORE

3. Systemic sclerosis : vascular, pulmonary and immunological aspects
Abstract : In systemic sclerosis (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) and engagement of the vascular system lead to increased morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate, in a consecutively included cohort of SSc (limited and diffuse) patients (n = 33), the T cell cytokine profile driving the disease in ILD and to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and its inhibitor: tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) degrading process leading to fibrous scarring and honey combing. 4. Role of glycosylation in regulation of E-selectin expression on endothelial cells
Abstract : Endothelial cells located on the vessel walls play an important role in inflammation. In response to cytokines or other inflammatory mediators endothelial cells will express different cell adhesion molecules that are involved in binding of circulating leukocytes to the endothelium. 5. Innate immune response in human endothelial cells : characterization and regulation of E-selectin, ICAM-I and cytokine expression and the role of Staphylococcus aureus
Abstract : Endothelial cells located on the vessel walls play an important role in inflammation. In response to cytokines or other inflammatory mediators such as microorganisms, endothelial cells express cell adhesion molecules such as E-selectin and ICAM-1 that are involved in binding circulating leukocytes to the endothelium.
