  1. 1. Regulation of CNS inflammation upon T cell interaction with CNS resident cells

    Author : Ingrid Teige; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuron; glia; CNS; T cell; cytokine; immunoregulation; MS; EAE;

    Abstract : Multiple Sclerosis (MS), is a neurologic, autoimmune disease characterized by CNS immune cell infiltration and demyelination. To experimentally study MS, we have utilized the mouse model Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE). EAE is induced through immunization with myelin antigens, which elicits an autoreactive Th1 cell response. READ MORE

  2. 2. Novel Immunotherapies and Immunoregulation in a Chronic Inflammatory Disease of the Central Nervous System

    Author : Shahram Lavasani; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; Djurfysiologi; Animal physiology; probiotics; immunotherapy; CD1; T-cell; CNS; inflammation; EAE; MS; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of central nervous system (CNS) which is thought to arise from a breakdown of immunological tolerance in CD4 cells. The aim of this thesis is to improve our understanding of regulation mechanisms of T cell-dependent chronic inflammation in the CNS and explore ways to overcome the onset and progression of the disease, which can be an important step forward in the treatment of MS. 3. 3. From disease to genes in animal models of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis

    Author : Therese Lindvall; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mice; animal models; autoimmunity; CIA; EAE; RA; MS;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are complex inflammatory autoimmune diseases. The aetiology is largely unknown but the risk of developing disease is dependent on both genetic and environmental factors. READ MORE

  4. 4. The Role of Reactive Oxygen Species in Animal Models of Autoimmunity

    Author : Malin Hultqvist; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mice; Phytol; ROS; NOX; NADPH; p47phox; Ncf1; EAE; inflammation; Arthritis; RA; MS; Rats; Autoimmunity;

    Abstract : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by the phagocyte NADPH oxidase complex are important in the killing of invading pathogens. Lately, a role of ROS has been suggested in regulation of the immune system. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases in Leukocyte Transmigration in Murine Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

    Author : Smriti Agrawal; Tumörmikromiljö; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine human and vertebrates ; mouse; Multiple Sclerosis; Blood-brain barrier; MMP; Dystroglycan; EAE; Medicin människa och djur ;

    Abstract : Murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a commonly used model in the investigation of the human disease multiple sclerosis (MS), a debilitating inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). MS and EAE involve multiple steps, primarily, auto-antigenic leukocyte (mainly T-cells and macrophages) crossing the blood-brain barrier and later their invasion into the CNS where they degrade myelin basic protein, eventually resulting in axonal degradation and CNS inflammation.
