21. Transcriptome based analysis of Hodgkin lymphoma : insights into the microenvironment
Abstract : This thesis is focused on the analysis of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), in particular the complex interaction between the malignant cells and the abnormally behaving bystander cells, and this complexity of the inflammatory infiltrate in HL constantly challenge scientists. The common thread in this thesis is the usage of gene expression profiling of whole tumour tissues, laser-captured Hodgkin Reed Sternberg (H-RS) cells and of cell-lines. READ MORE

22. Control of Epstein-Barr virus infection by cytotoxic T lymphocytes
Abstract : Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) play a critical role in response to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a widespread human herpes virus that persists in healthy carriers as a latent infection of B cells and is implicated in the pathogenesis of lymphoid and epithelial cell malignancies. Six virus encoded nuclear antigens, EBNA1-6, and three membrane proteins, LMP1, -2A and -2B, are regularly detected in EBV transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). READ MORE

23. On diverse biophysical aspects of genetics : from the action of regulators to the characterization of transcripts
Abstract : Genetics is among the most rewarding fields of biology for the theoretically inclined, offering both room and need for modeling approaches in the light of an abundance of experimental data of different kinds. Many aspects of the field are today understood in terms of physical and chemical models, joined by information theoretical descriptions. READ MORE

24. Biomarkers and viral risk factors in multiple sclerosis
Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting in axonal injury and demyelination of nerve fibers in the central nervous system. The causal factor and pathological mechanisms governing disease progression have remained elusive, limiting the available clinical tools for MS diagnosis and treatment monitoring, particularly in the periphery. 25. Employing epigenetic marks to detect cancer : studies on nasopharyngeal carcinoma and lung cancer
Abstract : Tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) or oncogenes aberrantly methylated in transcription control regions during early carcinogenesis are potential tools for early detection of cancer. We have identified suitable genes and explored assays based on their methylation status aiming for early detection of cancer: nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
