1. Lipid-Based Surface Modifications: towards the Development of Membrane-Protein Arrays
Abstract : Mimics of the natural cell membrane, such as lipid vesicles and supported lipid membranes, have gained significant attention in recent years. This is primarily due to their ability to provide scientists with a model system allowing a large arsenal of scientific tools to be used in studies of biological reactions that are naturally controlled by the cell membrane and its components. 2. Nanocomposite films for corrosion protection
Abstract : This thesis describes technical and scientific aspects of new types of composite films/coatings for corrosion protection of carbon steel, composite films with nanometer thickness consisting of mussel adhesive protein (Mefp‐1) and ceria nanoparticles, and polymeric composite coatings with micrometre thickness consisting of conducting polymer and ceria nanoparticles in a UV‐curing polyester acrylate (PEA) resin. The influence of microstructure on corrosion behaviour was studied for a Fe‐Cr‐V‐N alloy containing micro‐sized nitrides with different chemical composition spread in martensitic alloy matrix. 3. The Mussel Adhesive Protein (Mefp-1) : A GREEN Corrosion Inhibitor
Abstract : Corrosion of metallic materials is a natural process, and our study shows that even in an alkaline environment severe corrosion may occur on a carbon steel surface. While corrosion cannot be stopped it can be retarded. READ MORE

4. Lithium-ion batteries for off-grid PV-systems
Abstract : This thesis provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis on the effect ofthe battery operation strategy on the lifetime of commercial lithium-ionbatteries and on the economics of off-grid photovoltaic (PV)-batterysystems.Lithium-ion batteries play a key role in the transition to a fossil-freesociety. 5. Mechanistic studies of localized corrosion of Al alloys by high resolution in-situ and ex-situ probing techniques
Abstract : A multi-analytical approach based on in-situ and ex-situ local probing techniques was employed to investigate localized corrosion mechanisms of some aluminum alloys in chloride containing solutions, focusing on the influence of intermetallic particles (IMPs) in the alloys. In the EN AW-3003 alloy, SEM-EDS analysis revealed constituent and dispersoid IMPs. READ MORE
