1. Environmental Assessments of Landscape Changes : Interdisciplinary studies in rural Tanzania
Abstract : This thesis aims to show how biogeophysical and social processes are interlinked in landscape change, and to propose approaches for interdisciplinary environmental assessments (such as EIAs), concentrating on developing countries’ situations, and representation of findings from such studies. Landscape in its holistic sense is a very good concept and basis for intellectual and practical use in environmental dialogues. READ MORE

2. Tourism, Ecosystem Functions, and Human-Environmental Relations
Abstract : The thesis aims at deconstructing the sustainable tourism paradigm: can tourism be "a global strategy for sustainable development", as the tourist industry claims? And will developing countries in particular profit from tourism development? To most international organizations and institutions (from the World Wide Fund for Nature to The World Bank), tourism, if carefully managed, is a positive, sustainable development tool. However, the research presented in this thesis exposes this view as unrealistically optimistic for at least three reasons: first of all, global environmental change caused by tourism has never been investigated and integrated with the discourse on sustainable tourism development. 3. Patterns of fish larvae and zooplankton distribution in mangrove-seagrass seascapes of East Africa
Abstract : Mangroves and seagrass meadows create coastal seascapes acting as breeding and nursery grounds for many fish species in tropical areas. Despite increased awareness on the role of these coastal habitats to fish, less knowledge is given to fish larvae distribution and population dynamics, limiting the understanding of major drivers of fish population dynamics and fisheries resources management, particularly in understudied regions such as the Western Indian Ocean. 4. Managing Mangrove Ecosystem Services for Local Livelihoods and Adaptations in Tanzania
Abstract : Recognizing the importance of ecosystem services (ES) for peoples' livelihoods and well-being is important for decision-making processes on conservation. Mangrove ecosystems in Tanzania are protected by law, but they continue to be exposed to degradation and loss, and there is still limited information about the awareness, preferences, status and trends of the ES they provide. 5. Building a coherent hydro-climatic modelling framework for the data limited Kilombero Valley of Tanzania
Abstract : This thesis explores key aspects for synthesizing data across spatiotemporal scales relevant for water resources management in an Eastern Africa context. Specifically, the potential of large scale global precipitation datasets (GPDs) in data limited regions to overcome spatial and temporal data gaps is considered. READ MORE
