  1. 1. The Formation of Giant Planets

    Author : Michiel Lambrechts; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Planet formation; Solar System; Exoplanets; Giant planets; Hydrodynamics;

    Abstract : Giant planets form embedded in a protoplanetary disc around a young star. Close to the midplane a large fraction of the available mass in solids is found in particles of cm to dm in size, which drift towards the star due to friction with the surrounding gas. READ MORE

  2. 2. Formation and Early Evolution of Planetary Systems

    Author : Daniel Carrera; Astronomi - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; planet formation; planets and satellites: dynamical evolution and stability -- planets and satellites: gaseous planets -- planets and satellites: terrestrial planets; planets and satellites: terrestrial planets;

    Abstract : Over the past 20 years we have discovered that exoplanets are common in the Galaxy, and are far more diverse than anyone expected. Half of all Sun-like stars are accompanied by at least one super-Earth (a planet with a size between Earth and Neptune), many planets have very high eccentricities indicative of a dynamical origin, and a small fraction of stars are accompanied by hot Jupiters, whose origin is poorly understood. 3. 3. Turbulence-Assisted Planetary Growth : Hydrodynamical Simulations of Accretion Disks and Planet Formation

    Author : Wladimir Lyra; Nikolai Piskunov; Thomas Henning; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; accretion; accretion disks; hydrodynamics; instabilities; methods: numerical; solar system: formation; planets and satellites: formation; magnetohydrodynamics MHD ; turbulence; diffusion; stars: planetary systems: formation; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik;

    Abstract : The current paradigm in planet formation theory is developed around a hierarquical growth of solid bodies, from interstellar dust grains to rocky planetary cores. A particularly difficult phase in the process is the growth from meter-size boulders to planetary embryos of the size of our Moon or Mars. READ MORE

  4. 4. Atmospheric Species and Spectral Radiation in Terrestrial Exoplanets : Implications for Astrobiology

    Author : Samuel Konatham; Javier Martin-Torres; María-Paz Zorzano Mier; Akos Kereszturi; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Exoplanets; Atmospheres; Habitability; Human vision; Scotopic vision; Photopic vision; Spectral radaition; Atmosfärsvetenskap; Atmospheric science;

    Abstract : The physical properties of the planets and their parent stars are fundamental in the composition of atmospheres and radiative environments, which fundamentally determine their surface temperature and habitability. The atmospheric composition and radiation play a vital role in the emergence of life. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structures and processes in the Mercury magnetosphere

    Author : Elisabet Liljeblad; Tomas Karlsson; Anita Kullen; Haje Korth; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mercury; MESSENGER; magnetosphere; processes; structures; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : The mechanisms involved in the transfer of mass and energy from the solar wind to any planetary magnetosphere is considered an important topic in space physics. With the use of the Mercury spacecraft MESSENGER's data, it has been possible to study these processes in an environment different, yet similar, to Earth's. READ MORE
