  1. 6. On The Big Challenges of a Small Shrub : Ecological Genetics of Salix herbacea L

    Author : Andrés J. Cortés; Karrenberg Sophie; Christian Lexer; John Pannell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fine-scale environmental variation; migration; adaptation; snowmelt timing; Biologi; Biology;

    Abstract : The response of plants to climate change is among the main questions in ecology and evolution. Faced with changing conditions, populations may respond by adapting, going extinct or migrating. Fine-scale environmental variation offers a unique mosaic to explore these alternatives. READ MORE

  2. 7. Ecological studies of Baltic sea-shores : methods for botanical investigations of sea-shore meadows and reed-beds

    Author : Hans-Georg Wallentinus; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : .... READ MORE

  3. 8. Phylogeny of Selaginellaceae

    Author : Petra Korall; Birgitta Bremer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; fysiologisk botanik; Physiological Botany;

    Abstract : The phylogeny of Selaginellaceae, a small, but historically important family of heterosporous lycopods, has been the focus of this thesis. The approximately 700 extant species are herbaceous and distributed all over the world, with most species in the tropics and subtropics. READ MORE

  4. 9. Colonisation and extinction of vascular plants on islands off the Swedish east coast

    Author : Anders Löfgren; Lars Ericson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plants; ecological succession; colonizing ability; population dynamics; grasslands; islands; Sweden; plant ecology; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Persistence of species is a function of colonisation and extinction among patches at a regional scale. A decrease in area and an increased isolation of suitable patches may result in a decreased colonisation rate and an increased extinction rate among species. READ MORE

  5. 10. Life History and Tolerance and Resistance against Herbivores in Natural Populations of Arabidopsis thaliana

    Author : Reiko Akiyama; Jon Ågren; Arjen Biere; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; life history evolution; flowering time; germination; phenology; plant-herbivore interactions; natural selection; tolerance to leaf damage; resistance to herbivory; Plutella xylostella; Mamestra brassicae; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I combined observational studies with field and greenhouse experiments to examine selection on life history traits and variation in tolerance and resistance against herbivores in natural populations of the annual herb Arabidopsis thaliana in its native range. I investigated (1) phenotypic selection on flowering time and plant size, (2) the effects of timing of germination on plant fitness, (3) the effect of leaf damage on seed production, and (4) correlations between resistance against a specialist and a generalist insect herbivore.
