  1. 1. Sound perception and design in multimodal environments

    Author : PerMagnus Lindborg; Anders K. Friberg; Daniel Västfjäll; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; sound; perception; design; multimodal; environment; soundscape; music; listening; crossmodal; psychoacoustics; psychophysiology; personality trait; emotion; appraisal; aesthetics; colour; correlation; regression; classification; sonification; Tal- och musikkommunikation; Speech and Music Communication;

    Abstract : This dissertation is about sound in context. Since sensory processing is inherently multimodal, research in sound is necessarily multidisciplinary. The present work has been guided by principles of systematicity, ecological validity, complementarity of  methods, and integration of science and art. READ MORE

  2. 2. Consequences of stroke : aspects of impairments, disabilities and life satisfaction : with special emphasis on perception and on occupational therapy

    Author : Birgitta Bernspång; Axel R. Fugl-Meyer; Claes von Hofsten; Kjell Asplund; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stroke; impairment; disability; life satisfaction; perception; hemiplegia; occupational therapy;

    Abstract : Perceptual and motor functions and self-care ability after stroke were assessed within two weeks (n:109; mean age 69±10) and 4-6 years (n:75;70±9) after admission to a non-intensive care stroke unit. Sixty-two of the long-term stroke survivors reported on their life satisfaction (7 items) as experienced (in retrospect) before the stroke and at the time of the investigation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Contours of Cognition

    Author : Trond A. Tjøstheim; Kognitiv modellering; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; computational; cognitive; neuroscience; perception; memory; spatial cognition; trust; pupil dynamics; reflection; thinking; intelligence; reinforcement learning; foraging; allostasis; decision making;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the nature of cognition. It posits that cognitive processes primarily are means to maintain allostasis in organisms whose ecological niches require movement to approach food-resources and avoid predation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Embodied psychoacoustics: Spatial and multisensory determinants of auditory-induced emotion

    Author : Ana Tajadura; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ecological psychoacoustics; multisensory perception; emoacoustics; vibrotactile; auditory-induced emotion; embodiment; peripersonal space; self-representation;

    Abstract : The research presented in this thesis focuses on auditory perception, bringing together traditional psychoacoustics, emotion, embodiment and multisensory research. In particular, the current research explored how sound, and the interpretation the listener makes of it, induces emotions in people. READ MORE

    Abstract : Stroke, which has an increasing incidence with age, causes an irreversible brain damage which may lead to impairment, disability and decreased life satisfaction or death.Risk factors for death, recurrent stroke and myocardial infarction, were analyzed in 409 stroke patients treated at the Stroke Unit, Department of Medicine, Umeå University Hospital, between Jan.
