1. Spatial distribution and conservation planning of seabed biological diversity
Abstract : Knowledge of spatial patterns of biota has become a commodity for conservation practitioners and spatial ecologists alike. This type of information enables the identification of representative and unique biological features (at some nominal scale) which itself constitutes the application par excellence of knowledge of biodiversity distribution as it relates to the design of reserve networks and the realization of spatial planning. 4. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests
Abstract : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition. 5. Megaherbivores and Earth system functioning: Landscape-scale effects of white rhino loss on vegetation, fire and soil carbon dynamics
Abstract : Megaherbivores (> 1000 kg) have been suggested to strongly influence ecosystem functioning with consequences potentially scaling up to the global climate. However, due to poaching, we may lose some of the most vulnerable species at functional densities in the wild in the coming decades. READ MORE
