  1. 6. Ecology, tourism and management of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina)

    Author : Sandra M. Granquist; Anders Angerbjörn; Per-Åke Nilsson; Hrefna Sigurjónsdóttir; Arne Bjørge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Harbour seals; Phoca vitulina; ecology; tourism; wildlife; disturbance; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : In cases where human and wildlife are co-using the same geographical areas and resources, management issues often get complex and stakeholder conflicts are common. The Icelandic harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) population is rapidly decreasing, but direct culling of seals still occurs. READ MORE

  2. 7. Variation in Pseudorchis albida s.l. (Orchidaceae) and Carex capitata s.l. (Cyperaceae) : Morphology, genetic diversity, ecology and systematics

    Author : Lars-Gunnar Reinhammar; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Pseudorchis; Carex; morphologic variation; allozymes; immigration history; regeneration niche; biodiversity; ordinations; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; systematisk botanik; Systematic Botany;

    Abstract : In the Scandinavian flora, several species-pairs where one member is an alpine species andthe other is a closely related lowland species, have been described. The aim of this studywas to investigate two such examples, viz. Pseudorchis albida s.s. READ MORE

  3. 8. Molecular methods for microbial ecology : Developments, applications and results

    Author : Lucas Sinclair; Alexander Eiler; Josh Neufeld; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bioinformatics; microbiology; metagenomics; ecology; metabolism; Bioinformatik; Bioinformatics;

    Abstract : Recent developments in DNA sequencing technology allow the study of microbial ecology at unmatched detail. To fully embrace this revolution, an important avenue of research is the development of bioinformatic tools that enable scientists to leverage and manipulate the exceedingly large amounts of data produced. 4. 9. Methane dynamics in northern wetlands: Significance of vascular plants

    Author : Anna Joabsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; climate change; arctic wetlands; northern wetlands; plant-microbe interactions; methane emission; vascular plants; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : The studies presented in Papers I to VI illustrate several different aspects of the impact of vascular plants on methane emissions from northern natural wetlands. The subject has been approached on different scales, ranging from the study of microbial substrates in the vicinity of a single plant root, to an attempt to extrapolate some of the results to the entire northern hemisphere north of 50°N. 5. 10. Local adaptive pigmentation in Asellus aquaticus -effects of UV-radiation and predation regime

    Author : Jonas Johansson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; damselfly; perch; UV-avoidance; isopod; anti-predator traits; evolution; selective predation; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : Pigmentation in the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus differed between two habitats. Asellus were lighter pigmented in stands of submerged stonewort vegetation, than in nearby reed stands. Moreover, Asellus pigmentation became lighter with time in recently established stonewort stands. READ MORE
