21. Materials for advanced energy technology from quantum-mechanical modeling
Abstract : The present thesis addresses promising material solutions for fusion reactors from a theoretical point of view. We focus on two specific systems: W-based alloys used as plasma-facing materials and reduced activation ferritic/martensitic (RAFM, Ferich) steels used as structural materials of breeding-blanket. 22. Characterization of interfaces by elastic light scattering and profilometry
Abstract : This thesis deals with the characterization of interfaces by elastic light scattering and profilometry. The sensitivity of scattering measurements to surface topography were used in two major ways. It was shown that surface reactions in a liquid-solid interface can be monitored in situ in terms of changes in surface roughness. READ MORE

23. Mechanical considerations in the design of high-precision surface micromachined devices
Abstract : Many mechanical properties of surface micromachined devices, such as strength and elastic properties, depend on the manufacturing process and are therefore unique to the device. In order to achieve higher precision, it is essential that correct mechanical characteristics are used in the work of designing devices. READ MORE

24. Mechanics and tribology of micro- and nanolayered PVD coatings
Abstract : Thin coatings produced by physical vapour deposition (PVD) are increasingly applied tomechanical components such as metal cutting tools, forming tools and machine elements.Improved micro- and nanolayered PVD coatings have been studied with respect tomechanical and tribological properties. 25. Wear resistant low friction coatings for machine elements
Abstract : By the introduction of machine elements made of light metals, e.g. Al or Mg alloys, which are coated with a material providing high wear resistance and low friction coefficient, both economical and environmental benefits can be gained. A high resistance against wear results in increased lifetime and lower costs for spare parts and maintenance. READ MORE
