1. First Determination of the Electric Charge of the Top Quark and Studies of the Top Quark Pair Background to New Physics
Abstract : This thesis is concerned with experimental investigations of properties of the top quark and processes involving this particle. In the first part of the thesis, the first determination of the electric charge of the top quark is presented. READ MORE

2. Charge carrier traffic at interfaces in nanoeletronic structures
Abstract : This thesis describes investigations in relation to the search for materials with high dielectric constant, k, for future CMOS transistors. The most elementary quantities to be considered are k-value and energy band offsets between the dielectric and the silicon crystal on which it is deposited. READ MORE

3. Construction and Testing of the TileCal Digitizer and an Evaluation of the Discovery Potential for R-Hadrons at the ATLAS Detector at the LHC
Abstract : This thesis comprises two parts. In the first part an overview is given of the Standard Model, Supersymmetry and R-hadrons. R-hadrons are predicted within the framework of the Split-SUSY theory, in which the gluino can have a sufficiently long lifetime to hadronise into so-called R-hadrons. READ MORE

4. Some Aspects of Chirality: fermion masses and chiral p-forms
Abstract : This thesis deals with different types of chiral fields. The properties of fermion masses are investigated from different poits of view, both within the Standard Model and in extensions of the model. It is shown how mass matrix invariants are used to define the measurables of the quark mixing matrix as invariant functions of the mass matrices. READ MORE

5. Bright Needles in a Haystack : A Search for Magnetic Monopoles Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory
Abstract : The IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the geographic South Pole is designed to detect the light produced by the daughter-particles of in-ice neutrino-nucleon interactions, using one cubic kilometer of ice instrumented with more than 5000 optical sensors.Magnetic monopoles are hypothetical particles with non-zero magnetic charge, predicted to exist in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics.
