  1. 1. Cardiovascular risk factors in renal artery stenosis : Effects of renal angioplasty and angiotensin II receptor antagonism

    Author : Elzbieta Nowakowska-Fortuna; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; renovascular hypertension; endothelin 1; apolipoprtoein C-III; brain natriuretic peptides; angiotensin II receptor antagonism; renal angioplasty; atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis;

    Abstract : Renovascular hypertension (RVH) caused by atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS) is one of the most common forms of secondary hypertension. The prognosis for patients with RVH is much worse compared to patients with primary hypertension, and caused by a high cardiovascular morbidity. READ MORE

  2. 2. C-reactive protein (CRP) and anti-CRP autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus : a study on the occurrence and clinical implications of anti-CRP antibodies and CRP-mediated complement activation

    Author : Christopher Sjöwall; Thomas Skogh; Johan Frostegård; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; autoantibodies; complement activation; C-reactive protein; cytokines; immune complex; immunoregulation; opsonization; systemic lupus erythematosus; Rheumatology; Reumatologi;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by production of a wide range of autoantibodies, multiple organ involvement and by local formation or tissue deposition of immune complexes (ICs) in the inflamed organs. In contrast to most systemic inflammatory conditions, and despite raised levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, SLE flares are rarely reflected by elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), an important acute-phase reactant in man with homologs in vertebrates and several invertebrates. 3. 3. Malnutrition in patients with chronic renal failure

    Author : Abdul Rashid Tony Qureshi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : chronic renal failure; malnutrition; serum albumin; hand-grip strength; amino acids; inflammation;

    Abstract : Protein-energy malnutrition is common in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) and may contribute to a poor clinical outcome. However, the role of nutrition in this regard has not been clearly defined. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vascular and inflammatory markers in chronic kidney disease

    Author : Bodil Sjöberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), inflammation and malnutrition are harmful and highly prevalent conditions with influence on the atherosclerotic process and outcome. The risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is substantially increased in CKD patients compared with healthy individuals. READ MORE

  5. 5. Homocysteine and Coronary Artery Disease With special Reference to Biochemical Effects Of Vitamin Therapy

    Author : Torfi Jonasson; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Klinisk kemi; Clinical chemistry; pyridoxine.; oxidative stress; lipid peroxidation; inflammation; homocysteine; endothelial function; folate; F2-isoprostanes; cystatine C; Acut coronary syndrome; cardiovascular disease; asymmetric dimethylarginine; cobalamine;

    Abstract : An elevated plasma level of homocysteine has been suggested as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The objectives of this thesis were to study the influence of renal function on homocysteine levels in patients with coronary artery disease and to explore the association of elevated plasma levels of homocysteine to oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction.
