1. Biomarkers and bioindicators of hypoxia and sediment toxicity in Monoporeia affinis
Abstract : Two of the most pressing environmental problems in the Baltic Sea are pollution and oxygen deficiency. The aim of this doctoral thesis was to evaluate a set of biomarkers and reproductive variables in the amphipod Monoporeia affinis to test their suitability as indicators of exposure to contaminants and hypoxia. 2. Studies on in vitro fertilised human preembryos. Morphological and chromosomal aspects
Abstract : The success rate of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) has gradually increased due to basic research in preembryonic biology and the introduction of new methods, both technical and medical. However, further research is needed to establish which preembryos are developmentally most competent in order to be able to maintain the pregnancy rate while only a single preembryo is being transferred. 3. Improved environmental monitoring and assessment : Establishing links between effects of chemical pollution at different levels of biological organization in a Baltic Sea bioindicator species (Monoporeia affinis)
Abstract : A large number of chemicals enters the marine environment via atmospheric deposition, run-off, rivers and streams, industrial effluents and municipal wastewater. To understand how chemicals affect environmental health, monitoring and assessment approaches need to combine physical, chemical and biological effect parameters from different levels of biological organization. 4. The fate of primary aneuploid cells in early embryonic development and stem cells
Abstract : Chromosomal aberrations occurring during gametogenesis and early embryonic development play a significant role in infertility and fetal loss in humans. Germ cells that have an abnormal number of chromosomes (aneuploidy) are generated mainly due to errors during female gamete formation, a phenomenon increasing in occurrence with age. READ MORE

5. bHLH transcription factors in differentiating neuroblastoma cells
Abstract : Neuroblastoma is a tumor of the sympathetic nervous system, and arises during early childhood. The tumor is highly heterogeneous and evidence, such as expression of genes normally only expressed during embryonic and fetal stages, suggests that the tumor is of embryonic origin and that the tumor arises as a consequence of perturbed differentiation during the development of the sympathetic nervous system.
