  1. 11. Epidemiology of diabetes in a well defined population in Sweden: the Skaraborg Diabetes Registry

    Author : Bo Berger; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunology; diabetologi; Endokrinologi; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; IA-2A; GADA; ICA; islet antibodies; C-peptide; mortality; prevalence; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; Public health; incidence; epidemiology; epidemiologi; sekretion; Folkhälsa;

    Abstract : Time trends in prevalence, incidence and mortality was followed in 15000 diabetic patients in 1991?2005. Clinical findings, C-peptide protocols, and islet antibodies were compared in their ability to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes, and factors associated with the prognosis of diabetes were explored. 2. 12. The bank vole (Myodes glareolus) – a novel animal model for the study of diabetes mellitus

    Author : Martin Blixt; Stellan Sandler; Johnny Ludvigsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bank vole; pancreatic islets; diabetes mellitus; hydropic degeneration; proinflammatory cytokine; Diabetology; Diabetologi; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The bank vole (Microtus arvalis) develops glucose intolerance both when kept in captivity and in the wild state. Glucose intolerant bank voles kept in captivity exhibited polydipsia, polyuria, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, islet autoantibodies and a markedly changed islet structure resembling so–called hydropic degeneration. 3. 13. Antigen-specific islet antibodies: prediction of beta cell failure and differentiation between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes

    Author : Henrik Borg; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; Endokrinologi; secreting systems; Endocrinology; seropositive; seronegative; slowly-progressive; Type 2; Type 1; classification; IA-2A; IA-2; GADA; GAD; ICA; islet antibodies; C-peptide; beta cell function; diabetes mellitus; adult-onset; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : Autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA), protein tyrosine-phosphatase-like protein (IAÐ2A), and/or pancreatic islet cells (ICA) are autoimmune markers usually present at diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is therefore in general believed to be caused by an immune-mediated beta cell destruction. READ MORE

  4. 14. Common variants in genes regulating free fatty acid metabolism and risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease

    Author : Martin Carlsson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiovascular disease; free fatty acids; genetics; UCP1; beta3-adrenergic receptor; beta2-adrenergic receptor; type 2 diabetes mellitus; FABP2; stroke; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : Abstract The present study evaluated genetic and metabolic factors influencing the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) with special reference to increased concentrations of free fatty acids (FFA) in 1174 Swedish diabetic and nondiabetic subjects. Common polymorphisms in the fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2), the B2-adrenergic receptor (B2-AR), the B3 -adrenergic receptor (B3-AR) and the uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) genes were related to anthropometric and metabolic variables. 5. 15. Genetics of diabetic subtypes

    Author : Camilla Cervin; Diabetes - klinisk obesitasforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; Mutation; Association; Genetics; LADA; Diabetes; MODY; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : There are two major types of diabetes mellitus, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), however a number of subtypes have been defined and classified. Maternally Inherited Diabetes and Deafness (MIDD) and Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) are monogenic forms, whereas Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA) is thought to be a polygenic subtype similar to T1D.
