1. Endothelial-leukocyte interactions
Abstract : This thesis describes early inflammatory responses involving interactions between leukocytes and the endothelial lining of the blood vessel wall. An adhesion molecule, E-selectin, which is upregulated on interleukin-1 activated endothelium, was found to mediate rolling between leukocytes and endothelial cells in vivo. READ MORE

2. Endothelial Barrier Dysfunction in Multiple Organ Injury. An Experimental Study in Rats
Abstract : Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is still the leading cause of mortality in the surgical intensive care unit. The effect on among others endothelial barrier permeability, reticuloendothelial function, organ function and protease-antiprotease activities was studied following a variety of challenges, especially over-activation of macrophages induced by intraperitoneal administration of zymosan. 3. Properties of the endothelial cells and the glomerular barrier
Abstract : The kidneys are vital organs that filter plasma to produce 180 liters of primary urine per day. Only 1% of this volume is excreted and the rest is reabsorbed. Naturally, such huge amounts of fluid must be well controlled to maintain the homeostasis, which is a prerequisite for life. READ MORE

4. Dynamics of the glomerular filtration barrier - Physiological and pathophysiological aspects
Abstract : The dynamic properties of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) are of fundamental importance for the understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of microalbuminuria and proteinuric diseases. In the studies of this doctoral thesis the properties of the rat glomerular filtration barrier were investigated under resting conditions and following a number of challenges using highly sensitive gel filtration chromatography (HPSEC) detection of FITC-Ficoll in serum and urine. 5. Mechanisms for leukocyte-mediated adjustment of endothelial barrier function
Abstract : Extravasation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and associated plasma exsudation are key events in the inflammatory process. The mechanism by which activated PMN may induce increased vascular permeability for macromolecules is not fully understood but crucially dependent on an intact leukocytic beta2 integrin (CD11/CD18) adhesion receptor function.
