  1. 1. Exposure and effects of naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers in fish : Implications for Baltic Sea wildlife

    Author : Johan Gustafsson; Lillemor Asplund; Pim E.G. Leonards; Marja H. Lamoree; Robert Letcher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecotoxicology; Metabolomics; OH-PBDE; Algae; Cyanobacteria; Natural products; Thiamine; Health; Biomarker; Seasonal variation; Perch; Zebrafish; Flame retardant; Mixture; 6-OH-BDE47; Energy metabolism; Endocrine disruption; Neurotoxicity; OXPHOS; Environmental Chemistry; miljökemi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate if naturally produced hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) are causing negative health effects for Baltic Sea wildlife. In the laboratory, OH-PBDEs have shown to be potent disrupters of energy metabolism as well as endocrine disruptors and neurotoxins. READ MORE

  2. 2. Optical Diagnostics of Soot in Combusting Sprays

    Author : Raul Lima Ochoterena; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Optical diagnostics.; Laser Induced Incandescence LII ; Elastic Light Scattering ELS ; Soot formation; Flame temperature; Spray combustion; Light Extinction LE ;

    Abstract : Optical diagnostics in combusting diesel sprays were carried out in the Chalmers High Pressure, High Temperature (HP/HT) spray rig at conditions similar to those in an internal combustion engine, reaching up to 100 bar and 630 ◦ C. Spray development studies and combustion characterisation were done by high speed shadowgraphs that were digitally processed to measure the start of combustion, break-up, droplets and vapour penetration. Abstract : Enzymes are biological catalysts that significantly increase the rate of all biochemical reactions that take place within cells and are essential to maintain life. Many questions regarding their function remain unknown. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modeling Auto-Ignition, Flame Propagation and Combustion in Non-Stationary Turbulent Sprays

    Author : Anders Karlsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; auto-ignition; transient; flame propagation; turbulence; spray formation; prediction; stirred reactor approximation; model; reduced chemistry; combustion;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on detailed numerical studies of spray formation, auto-ignition, envelope flame development and combustion in a simple two-dimensional axi-symmetric geometry. A Lagrangian -- Eulerian formulation is used to analyze the droplet motion and gas flow field. READ MORE

  5. 5. Indoor air quality and chemical emissions of organic compounds in newly built low-energy preschools

    Author : Josefin Persson; Thanh Wang; Jessika Hagberg; Pim Leonards; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Indoor air quality; volatile organic compounds; brominated flame retardants; organophosphate flame retardants; low-energy preschools; environmental certification; indoor dust; surface wipes;

    Abstract : In 2010, the European Union (EU) introduced the “Energy performance of Buildings” directive, which stipulates that all new buildings must reduce their energy consumption by constructing low-energy buildings. This could be achieved by constructing airtight and energy efficient envelopes with functional building materials such as age-resistant plastic films, insulation and different sealing products.
