  1. 1. Energy metabolism as a target for new treatment strategies in Huntington’s disease

    Author : Marie Sjögren; Biomarkörer vid hjärnsjukdomar; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Huntington´s disease; Energy metabolic alteration; Weight loss; Skeletal muscle; Adipose tissue; R6 2; Ghrelin; Liraglutide;

    Abstract : Huntington´s disease (HD) is a fatal inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG triplet repeat expansion in the huntingtin (HTT) gene and characterized by cognitive and motoric dysfunctions as well as psychiatric problems. Accumulating evidence, however, suggests altered energy metabolism and a hyper-catabolic state as key features of HD pathology. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spices in the postprandial metabolic regulation of healthy humans : An integrated physiological and omics approach

    Author : Yoghatama Cindya Zanzer; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Keywords : Spices; Postprandial; Glycemia; Lipemia; Appetite regulation; Metabolic endotoxemia; Bile acids; Transcriptomics; Nutrigenomics;

    Abstract : Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a consequence of obesity and defined as cluster of at least three out of five criteria covering insulin resistance/glucose intolerance, abdominal obesity, hypertension, low HDL-c and elevated TG levels. Imbalance between energy intake and expenditure is known to alter normal physiological function in many aspects, and leads to obesity, which in the long run may turn into type 2 diabetes (T2D) and ultimately cardiovascular disease (CVD). 3. 3. Analysis and engineering of central metabolism in Clostridium thermocellum

    Author : Teun Kuil; Antonius J. A. van Maris; Ruud Weusthuis; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Clostridium thermocellum; biofuels; ethanol; atypical glycolysis; pyrophosphate; phosphofructokinase; thermodynamic driving force; redox cofactor balancing; amino acid secretion; chaotropicity; hexose utilization; laboratory evolution; metabolic engineering; Biotechnology; Bioteknologi;

    Abstract : To mitigate climate change, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced to net-zero in 2050 requiring a drastic transition in today´s energy sector. To achieve this goal, the use of biofuels produced from lignocellulosic feedstocks, including agricultural and forestry residues, is expected to play an important role. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ecosystem processes and biodiversity : theoretical studies and experiments with an aquatic model ecosystem

    Author : Jon Norberg; Michael L Pace; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Systems Ecology; systemekologi;

    Abstract : Today, human enterprise has implications for all of nature, from the well being of the smallest organism, to the alteration of global biogeochemical cycles. To understand how major ecosystem processes are affected by environmental changes and decreasing biodiversity is crucial as many of natures services depend of such processes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Interplay between mitochondria, primary cilium, diabetes and its complications

    Author : Noah Moruzzi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Diabetes is one of the major health problems of the 21st century. Dysfunction of the insulin secreting pancreatic β-cell together with insulin resistance is central to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The cause of the disease and the underlying mechanisms linking hyperglycemia to diabetes complications are still unclear. READ MORE
