  1. 11. Plankton communities in a changing world - responses to temperature, brownification and lake restoration

    Author : Mattias Ekvall; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate change; temperature; warming; brownification; biomanipulation; zooplankton; cyanobacteria; microcystin; grazing; Daphnia;

    Abstract : The effects of increasing temperatures, in light of climate change, have been a well-studied topic during the past decades. However, aquatic ecosystems are also faced with additional challenges such as increasing water colour, known as “brownification”. READ MORE

  2. 12. Zooplankton response to cyanotoxins

    Author : Susanne Gustafsson; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Naturvetenskap; Natural science; cyanotoxins; maternal effects; algal toxins; zooplankton; tolerance; cyanobacteria;

    Abstract : Mass development of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is common in many lakes and coastal waters worldwide as a result of an increased nutrient loading. These blooms of cyanobacteria are undesirable for several reasons; thick mats of algae and unpleasant odour reduces the recreational values, bad taste reduces the quality of drinking water and the potent toxins produced by some species of cyanobacteria endanger human health. 3. 13. Aquatic organisms on the pill - effects on different organizational levels

    Author : Per Hallgren; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; EDC; EE2; 17α-ethinylestradiol; fish; zooplankton; gastropods; population growth rates; direct and indirect effects; somatic growth; invertebrates;

    Abstract : Communities are composed of organisms that interact with each other and with the non-biological environment. There are also anthropogenic pollutants in the environment that also interact with the organisms. READ MORE

  4. 14. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective

    Author : Melanie Hedgespeth; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecotoxicology; aquatic; trophic level; pharmaceutical; SSRI; beta-blocker; sertraline; fluoxetine; propranolol; fish; daphnia; snail; predator; prey; behavior; life history; multiple stressor;

    Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 5. 15. Causes and consequences of individual variation in anti-predator traits

    Author : Kaj Hulthén; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal migration; partial migration; individual differences; predator; personality trait; phenotypic plasticity; inducible defence; mortality risk;

    Abstract : Predation imposes a potent evolutionary force on prey, moulding the evolution of traits and diversification of species, and can furthermore have powerful ecological consequences. We know that different species vary in how they cope with their natural enemies, and, consequently, a huge range of anti-predator defences are displayed in nature. READ MORE
