  1. 1. Genetic subtypes in unicellular intestinal parasites with special focus on Blastocystis

    Author : Joakim Forsell; Birgitta Evengård; Margareta Granlund; Tom van Gool; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intestinal parasites; Blastocystis; Entamoeba; Giardia; molecular detection; PCR; subtype; intestinal microbiota; Sweden; Zanzibar; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : The development of molecular tools for detection and typing of unicellular intestinal parasites has revealed genetic diversities in species that were previously considered as distinct entities. Of great importance is the genetic distinction found between the pathogenic Entamoeba histolytica and the non-pathogenic Entamoeba dispar, two morphologically indistinguishable species. READ MORE

  2. 2. Assembly and proteolytic cleavages of gel-forming mucins

    Author : Martin Lidell; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : mucins; MUC2; MUC5AC; dimer; trimer; cleavage; Entamoeba histolytica; cysteine protease;

    Abstract : Gel-forming mucins are large glycoproteins constituting the main structural component of themucus layer protecting epithelial surfaces of the body. This thesis aims to a deeper understandingof how gel-forming mucins are synthesized and assembled, and how they may interact with othermolecules. READ MORE

  3. 3. Molecular diagnosis of drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and virulence factors in Entamoeba histolytica

    Author : Sherwan Zindrou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Plasmodium falciparum; dhfr gene; pyrimethamine; cycloguanil; mutations; Polymerase chain reaction; Entamoeba histolytica; hemolysins; hemolysis; virulence factors.;

    Abstract : Four species of the protozoan parasite genus Plasmodiun are known to infect man. Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent species is increasingly associated with resistance to antimalarial drugs. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular Diagnosis and Characterization of Two Intestinal Protozoa : Entamoeba histolytica & Giardia intestinalis

    Author : Marianne Lebbad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []

    Abstract : Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia intestinalis are two of the most important and most widespread diarrhea-related parasitic protozoa in the world. Approximately 1200 1500 cases of Giardia and 200 400 cases of Entamoeba are reported each year in Sweden, whereas the corresponding numbers are much higher in developing countries like Nicaragua. 5. 5. Alpha-actinin - an amazing journey through time and species

    Author : Barbara Addario; Lars Backman; Yari Ylänne; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In eukaryotes, the actin cytoskeleton plays an important role in a large variety of cellular events. Its reorganization is regulated by a plethora of actin-modulating proteins, such as α-actinin. α-actinin is a ubiquitous actin-binding protein that belongs to the spectrin superfamily. READ MORE
