  1. 1. Searching for food in complex environments : Integrating processes at multiple spatial scales

    Author : Thomas Alexander Verschut; Peter Hambäck; Peter Anderson; Ring Cardé; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Associational effects; Natal experiences; Olfaction; Oviposition; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : Resources are often unevenly distributed through the environment, resulting in a challenging task for insects to locate food, mates and oviposition sites. Consequently, there is an ongoing need to unravel how insects rely on behavioural and sensory traits while searching for resources in heterogeneous environments. READ MORE

  2. 2. Towards Pharmacological Treatment of Cystic Fibrosis

    Author : Charlotte Andersson; Aleksander Edelman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; cystic fibrosis; airway epithelium; genotype; CFTR; chloride transport; genistein; phenotype; phenylbutyrate; S-nitrosoglutathione; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; entomologi; Entomology;

    Abstract : S-nitrosogluthatione is an endogenous substance, present at decreased levels in the lungs of CF patients and was recently found to induce mature CFTR in airway epithelial CF cell lines. We show that S-nitrosoglutathione in physiological concentrations increases the presence of ΔF508 CFTR in the cell membrane and induces cAMP dependent chloride transport in cystic fibrosis airway epithelial cells. 3. 3. Importance of tannins for responses of aspen to anthropogenic nitrogen enrichment

    Author : Franziska Bandau; Benedicte Albrectsen; Michael Gundale; Lisbeth Josson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; aspen; foliar condensed tannins; genetic variability; anthropogenic nitrogen enrichment; plant growth; plant defense; litter decomposition; Populus tremula; asp; kondenserade tanniner; genetisk variabilitet; antropogent kväve; tillväxt; växtförsvar; förna nedbrytning; Populus tremula; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany; Entomology; entomologi; Physiological Botany; fysiologisk botanik; Population Biology; populationsbiologi;

    Abstract : Boreal forests are often strongly nitrogen (N) limited. However, human activities are leading to increased N inputs into these ecosystems, through atmospheric N deposition and forest fertilization. READ MORE

  4. 4. Food selection and fitness optimisation in insects

    Author : Helene Bracht Jörgensen; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; food preference; nested PCR; fungal DNA; växtparasitologi; plant parasitology; Entomology; Entomologi; fungi; seeds; ground beetles; collembolans;

    Abstract : To optimise fitness is a continuous process which assists species survival in changing environments. Choosing an optimal diet is an essential part of the optimisation process and a key element of optimal foraging theory. READ MORE

  5. 5. Systematics of Eucoilini : Exploring the diversity of a poorly known group of Cynipoid parasitic wasps

    Author : Mattias Forshage; Fredrik Ronquist; Göran Nordlander; John Heraty; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Eucoila; Trybliographa; Eucoilini; Eucoilinae; Figitidae; Cynipoidea; Hymenoptera; phylogenetics; diagnostics; classification; taxonomy; systematic revision; morphology; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Entomology; entomologi; systematisk zoologi; Systematic Zoology;

    Abstract : Many animal species are still undiscovered, even in Sweden. This thesis deals with the wasps of the subfamily Eucoilinae (of Figitidae, Cynipoidea), a poorly known group of small parasitoids of Dipteran flies. READ MORE
