    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis is  to demonstrate and critically assess life cycle approaches’ and environmental certification (EC) tools’ potential for supporting decisions for improved environmental performance in the building and real estate sectors.Using life cycle approaches, the thesis shows that for new build and renovation cases aiming for low operational energy use that embodied global warming potential (GWP) due to material production can constitute a large portion of a building’s lifetime GWP. 2. 2. Biodiversity in environmental assessment : tools for impact prediction

    Author : Mikael Gontier; Berit Balfors; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; Environmental impact assessment; Strategic environmental assessment; Biodiversity assessment; Prediction tools; GIS; GIS-base ecological models; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Urbanisation and infrastructure developments impact on the surrounding natural environment and threaten biodiversity. The fragmentation of natural habitats in particular is a major obstacle for the preservation of biodiversity in a long-term perspective. READ MORE

  3. 3. Assessing design strategies for improved life cycle environmental performance of vehicles

    Author : Sofia Poulikidou; Anna Björklund; Per Wennhage; Gregory Keoleian; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURVETENSKAP; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURAL SCIENCES; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Vehicle design; Design strategies; Lightweight design; Electric vehicles; Design for Environment DfE ; DfE tools; Life cycle assessment LCA ; Simplified LCA; Composite materials; Planering och beslutsanalys; Planning and Decision Analysis;

    Abstract : Vehicle manufactures have adopted different strategies for improving the environmental performance of their fleet including lightweight design and alternative drivetrains such as EVs. Both strategies reduce energy during use but may result in a relative increase of the impact during other stages. READ MORE

  4. 4. Environmental assessment of incinerator residue utilisation

    Author : Susanna Toller; Jon Petter Gustafsson; Dan Berggren Kleja; Erik Kärrman; Thomas H. Christensen; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MSWI bottom ash; wood ash; recycling; LCA; environmental assessment; geochemical speciation modelling; dissolved organic matter; copper Cu ; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract :  In Sweden, utilisation of incinerator residues outside disposal areas is restricted by environmental concerns, as such residues commonly contain greater amounts of potentially toxic trace elements than the natural materials they replace. On the other hand, utilisation can also provide environmental benefits by decreasing the need for landfill and reducing raw material extraction. READ MORE

  5. 5. Innovation Processes and Environmental Planning : Science and Technology Policies in a Regional Context

    Author : Katarina Larsen; Folke Snickars; Andrew Stirling; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Innovation; environmental planning; science and technology parks; strategic environmental research; environmental procurement; futures studies; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : The understanding of environmental change and how it is influenced by innovation processes and advances in science and technology is multifaceted given the inherent uncertainty of the pace and direction of technology change, but also given the limits to anticipate future environmental effects of new technology. The doctoral thesis is organised in two parts. READ MORE
