  1. 1. Targeted and untargeted analysis of organic contaminants from on-site sewage treatment facilities : Removal, fate and environmental impact

    Author : Kristin Blum; Peter Haglund; Patrik Andersson; Pim Leonards; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURAL SCIENCES; decentralized sewage treatment; wastewater; surface water; environmental fate; bioavailability; removal efficiency; mass fluxes; biochar; environment; GC×GC-MS; LC-IM-MS; mass spectrometry; contaminants; pollutants; prioritization; non-target analysis; screening; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : On-site sewage treatment facilities (OSSFs) are widely used all over the world to treat wastewater when large-scale sewage treatment plants (STPs) are not economically feasible. Although there is great awareness that the release of untreated wastewater into the environment can lead to water-related diseases and eutrophication, little is known about organic contaminants and their removal by OSSFs, environmental load and fate. 2. 2. Concentrate or dilute contaminants? : Strategies for Swedish wood waste

    Author : Joakim Krook; Anders Mårtensson; Stefan Anderberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Management strategies; environmental aspects; heavy metals; separation; regulation; market interactions; actors; avfall; miljö; sortering; föroreningar; tungmetaller; impregnerat trä; styrmedel; kundkrav; lagstiftning; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to assess the environmental consequences of management strategies for wood waste in Sweden. There is a special focus on separation strategies and in what way such measures influence environmental aspects such as the presence of heavy metals in the waste. READ MORE

  3. 3. A Deep Dive into Sediments : Exploring approaches to assess environmental risks and achieving environmental goals in management of contaminated sediments in Sweden

    Author : Peter Bruce; Clare Bradshaw; Yvonne Ohlsson; Anna Sobek; Sabine Apitz; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : Contaminated sediments are common, especially near urban and industrialized areas, and they can have negative ecological effects. In three studies, I explore the challenges for environmental management of contaminated sediments, focusing on environmental risk assessment (ERA) in Sweden. READ MORE

  4. 4. Peat Coated with Iron Oxides : Purification of Metal(loid)-Contaminated Water and Treatment of the Spent Adsorbent

    Author : Alfreda Kasiuliene; Jurate Kumpiene; Ivan Carabante; Prosun Bhattacharya; Luke Beesly; Luleå tekniska universitet; []

    Abstract : In Sweden due to the industrial activities, such as wood impregnation, multiple point sources of arsenic (As) contamination in soil and water bodies are scattered over the country. Metals, such as chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd) or zinc (Zn) at varying concentrations are usually present as well. READ MORE

  5. 5. Remediation of materials with mixed contaminants : treatability, technology and final disposal

    Author : Kristin Elgh-Dalgren; Patrick van Hees; Bert Allard; Dan Berggren Kleja; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bioremediation; Microtox®; mixed contaminants; re-cycling; soil remediation; soil washing.; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Contaminated soils are a large issue worldwide and much effort has been made to find efficient remediation methods. At many contaminated sites, mixtures of different contaminants with different properties are present, which may lead to additional problems, and thus additional costs, during the remediation process.
