  1. 11. Advancing the life cycle energy optimisation methodology

    Author : Hamza Bouchouireb; Ciarán J. O'Reilly; Peter Göransson; Rupert J. Baumgartner; José Potting; Tracy Bhamra; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; life cycle energy; vehicle design; optimisation; functional conflicts; livscykelenergi; fordonsdesign; optimering; tvär-funktionella konflikter; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : The Life Cycle Energy Optimisation (LCEO) methodology aims at finding a design solution that uses a minimum amount of cumulative energy demand over the different phases of the vehicle's life cycle, while complying with a set of functional constraints. This effectively balances trade-offs, and therewith avoids sub-optimal shifting between the energy demand for the cradle-to-production of materials, operation of the vehicle, and end-of-life phases. 2. 12. Agency and Artefacts : A cognitive semiotic exploration of design

    Author : Juan Mendoza-Collazos; Kognitiv semiotik; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Agency; enhanced agency; agency hierarchy; derived agency; material agency; intentionality; prior intentions; intentions in action; pictorial representations; artefacts; tool-making; design theory; design semiotics; design research; phenomenology; cognitive semiotics; agentive semiotics; semiotic hierarchy; 4E cognition; bio-cultural evolution; philosophy of design; philosophy of technology;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the role of artefacts in relation to human agency and design within a cognitive semiotics framework. It deals with questions such as What is agency? What are artefacts and how does agency relate to them? What kind of intentions are involved in the activity of designing? What is human-specific with respect to agency and design? How can the origins and evolution of design be explained? Addressing these questions, the thesis proposes a layered model of agency for explaining the relations between different grades of agentive complexity. READ MORE

  3. 13. Extreme environments - Design and human factors considerations

    Author : Olga Bannova; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Extreme environments; Engineering; Engineer; Architect; Design Planning; Architecture; Multidisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Design and Planning; Human Factors;

    Abstract : The starting point of this research is based on my experience at SICSA performing research and design for extreme environments, including orbital and lunar planetary facilities, disaster shelters, polar stations and offshore surface and submersible habitats. This thesis explores what aspects and issues of design and planning processes in extreme environments have to be addressed in a similar way and therefore may be used as a basis for further work toward PhD thesis to develop a methodological planning tool or matrix. 4. 14. Human Centred Design for Maritime Safety: A User Perspective on the Benefits and Success Factors of User Participation in the Design of Ships and Ship Systems

    Author : Nicole Almeida Costa; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; domain knowledge; co-design; design decisions; participatory design; maritime safety.; sociotechnical systems; integration; participatory ergonomics; user centred design;

    Abstract : For over six decades, Human Centred Design (HCD) has been considered a desired design approach for the implementation of Human Factors/Ergonomics (HF/E) knowledge and methods for understanding the needs of the end-users. Although other comparable frameworks exist, they can be seen as subcategories or as tools for HCD, as HCD is considered by some as an overarching approach. READ MORE

  5. 15. Spatial Design for Circularity - Exploring Spatial Aspects in Housing Design with Focus on the Kitchen

    Author : Anita Ollár; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; spatial design; value proposition; circular economy; sociomateriality; adaptability; kitchen; circular design; housing design;

    Abstract : The building industry and especially multiresidential buildings are responsible for a large portion of environmental impact, energy use and resource exploitation. Hence, there is a need to shift towards more sustainable design solutions for such buildings, which might be achieved by adopting circular economy strategies. READ MORE
