21. Phase Noise Tolerant Modulation Formats and DSP Algorithms for Coherent Optical Systems
Abstract : Coherent detection together with multilevel modulation formats has the potential to significantly increase the capacity of existing optical communication systems at no extra cost in signal bandwidth. However, these modulation formats are more susceptible to the impact of different noise sources and distortions as the distance between its constellation points in the complex plane reduces with the modulation index. 22. Controlling the Influent Load to Wastewater Treatment Plants
Abstract : The need for control of the influent load to a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is becoming more important. One reason for this is that there are a number of things that cannot be achieved with plant-focused control. READ MORE

23. Understanding didactic strategies based on the Laban-Malmgren technique when developing the technical and musical proficiency of singers
Abstract : In this thesis multiple methods were used to explore how the use of didactic strategies based on the LMT may enable a voice pedagogue to develop the technical and musical proficiency of singers who specialise in Western art music. Data for this qualitative study were collected by working with fourteen singers in South Africa and Sweden during workshops, masterclasses and individual lessons. READ MORE

24. Essays on the Evaluation of Public Policies
Abstract : This thesis consists of four self-contained papers.Essay 1: This paper uses the synthetic control (SC) method to examine how the establishment of Nuclear Power Facilities (NPFs) in Japan in the 1970s and 1980s has affected local per capita income levels in the municipalities in which they were located (NPF municipalities). 25. High-Throughput Power-Efficient DSP for Fiber-Optic Communication Systems
Abstract : Communication networks are a vital backbone of the modern society. Power dissipation of optical communication links and digital signal processing (DSP) subsystems for these links are a major concern as throughput requirements increase, and the number of deployed systems grows. READ MORE
