  2. 2. Studies on a Novel Powder Formulation for Nasal Drug Delivery

    Author : Nelly Fransén; Erik Björk; Katarina Edsman; Lars Hovgaard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nasal drug delivery; nasal powder spray; interactive mixture; mucoadhesion; sodium starch glycolate; superdisintegrant; bioavailability; clinical trial; Pharmaceutics; Galenisk farmaci;

    Abstract : Nasal administration has potential for the treatment of indications requiring a fast onset of effect or for drugs with low oral bioavailability. Liquid nasal sprays are relatively common, but can be associated with suboptimal absorption from the nasal cavity; this thesis shows that nasal absorption can be significantly enhanced with a dry powder formulation. 3. 3. Mathematical Models in Cellular Biophysics

    Author : Jacob Kowalewski; Hjalmar Brismar; Erik Fransén; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Calcium oscillations; Diffusion; Dopamine receptors; Mathematical models; Computer simulations; FRAP; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Cellular biophysics deals with, among other things, transport processes within cells. This thesis presents two studies where mathematical models have been used to explain how two of these processes occur. Cellular membranes separate cells from their exterior environment and also divide a cell into several subcellular regions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Beyond AMPA and NMDA: Slow synaptic mGlu/TRPC currents : Implications for dendritic integration

    Author : Marcus Petersson; Erik Fransén; Abdel El Manira; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transient receptor potential; TRP; metabotropic glutamate receptor; mGlu1 5; dendritic integration; synaptic activation; temporal summation; low-frequency; entorhinal cortex; mathematical model; computational neuroscience; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Abstract : In order to understand how the brain functions, under normal as well as pathological conditions, it is important to study the mechanisms underlying information integration. Depending on the nature of an input arriving at a synapse, different strategies may be used by the neuron to integrate and respond to the input. READ MORE

  5. 5. Dendritic and axonal ion channels supporting neuronal integration : From pyramidal neurons to peripheral nociceptors

    Author : Marcus Petersson; Erik Fransén; Theodore Cummins; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ion channels; computational modeling; simulations; dendrites; axons; TRP; hippocampus; C-fiber nociceptors; pain;

    Abstract : The nervous system, including the brain, is a complex network with billions of complex neurons. Ion channels mediate the electrical signals that neurons use to integrate input and produce appropriate output, and could thus be thought of as key instruments in the neuronal orchestra. READ MORE
