  1. 1. Compositional clues to sources and sinks of terrestrial organic matter transported to the Eurasian Arctic shelf

    Author : Emma Karlsson; Örjan Gustafsson; Volker Brüchert; Thorsten Dittmar; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic carbon; degradation; microcosm; incubation; terrestrial biomarkers; acyl lipids; lignin phenols; radiocarbon; Eurasian Arctic shelf; East Siberian Sea; Laptev Sea; Lena River; colloidal matter; particulate matter; sedimentary matter; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The amount of organic carbon (OC) present in Siberian Arctic permafrost soils is estimated at twice the amount of carbon currently in the atmosphere. The shelf seas of the Arctic Ocean receive large amounts of this terrestrial OC from Eurasian Arctic rivers and from coastal erosion. READ MORE

  2. 2. Conservation Genetics of the Eurasian Otter in Sweden

    Author : Johanna Arrendal; Mats Björklund; Carles Vilà; Ralph Tiedemann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Ecology; in situ conservation; individual identification; microsatellites; mtDNA; noninvasive genetic sampling; population dynamics; population size; PVA; restocking; Ekologi; Lutra lutra;

    Abstract : In this thesis, molecular genetic methods were used to study a threatened species, the Eurasian otter. Estimates of population size and population dynamics parameters were obtained, the genetic effects of a restocking program was evaluated, and a population viability analysis was conducted to assess which demographic parameters are most important for the future viability of an otter population. 4. 4. Ecological and biogeochemical implications of the recovery of Eurasian beavers

    Author : Oded Levanoni; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In pre-industrial times beavers, ecosystem engineers, inhabited most of the Holarctic. Intensive exploitation over the last millennium, particularly in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, led to a dramatic decline in beaver populations. READ MORE

  5. 5. Anthropogenic impact on predator guilds and ecosystem processes : Apex predator extinctions, land use and climate change

    Author : Marianne Pasanen Mortensen; Bodil Elmhagen; Francisco Palomares; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mesopredators; apex predators; top-down; bottom-up; interspecific killing; red fox; Eurasian lynx; grey wolf; wolverine; productivity; winter severity; cropland; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Humans affect ecosystems by changing species compositions, landscape and climate. This thesis aims to increase our understanding of anthropogenic effects on mesopredator abundance due to changes in apex predator status, landscape and climate. READ MORE
