  1. 1. The Big Bad EU? Species Protection and European Federalism : A Case Study of Wolf Conservation and Contestation in Sweden

    Author : Yaffa Epstein; Jan Darpö; An Cliquet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Habitats Directive; species protection; subsidiarity; Endangered Species Act;

    Abstract : This dissertation examines how eco-knowledge intersects with the changes to EU legal cultures and practices known as eurolegalism. This conjunction has created a mechanism for the extension of EU law in the Member States even in the face of a weakened EU. READ MORE

  2. 2. Global Changes and European Terrestrial Ecosystems

    Author : Emmanuel Gritti; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; European species; Climatic risk; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorphology; Physical geography; Vegetation modelling; Pollen analysis; Plant invasion; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi; Global Changes;

    Abstract : Global environmental changes are topics of important societal concern and current scientific interest. These changes are driven by many different forcing and feedbacks occurring at various time and geographic scales and are largely influencing the various Earth systems. READ MORE

  3. 3. European Black Grouse : MHC Genetic Diversity and Population Structure

    Author : Tanja Strand; Jacob Höglund; Helena Westerdahl; David S. Richardson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Major Histocompatibility Complex; BLB; balancing selection; concerted evolution; bottleneck; fragmentation; 3 UTR; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Black grouse Tetrao tetrix is a bird species composed of large, continuous as well as severely reduced and fragmented populations, making it an optimal species to investigate how genetic diversity is affected by habitat fragmentation. I have focused on genetic diversity in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) to measure the ability of the black grouse to respond to environmental changes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Is genetic diversity more important for terpene emissions than latitudinal adaptation? : Using genetically identical trees to better understand emission fluctuations across a European gradient

    Author : Ylva van Meeningen; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; BVOC; English oak; European beech; Norway spruce; genetic diversity; European gradient;

    Abstract : Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are trace gases other than CO2 and CH4 produced and emitted by the vegetation. The group consists of thousands of compounds in various shapes and sizes and with short atmospheric lifetimes. Some of the most common BVOC groups are called isoprene, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Conservation, personality and ecology of the European mink (Mustela lutreola)

    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; European mink; Mustela lutreola; Conservation; Personality; Individual specialism; Diet; American mink; Neovison vison; Intraguild competition; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Loss of biodiversity is a growing problem and hence conservation of species is becoming increasingly important. In this dissertation conservation issues related to the critically endangered European mink (Mustela lutreola) are examined in situ (in the wild) and ex situ (in captivity) on both an individual and community level.
