12. Significance of Wilms’ tumor gene 1 as a biomarker in acute leukemia and solid tumors
Abstract : Wilms’ tumor gene 1 (WT1) is a zinc finger transcriptional regulator with crucial functions in embryonic development. Originally WT1 was described as a tumor suppressor gene, but later studies have shown oncogenic properties of WT1 in a variety of tumors. Because of its dual functions in tumorigenesis, WT1 has been described as a chameleon gene. READ MORE

13. Asthma and cancer among pulp and paper mill workers
Abstract : There were two main aims of this thesis. One was to study if repeated high exposures to irritant gases give rise to new-onset asthma, and the other was to study if exposure in pulp and paper mills were associated with cancer. READ MORE

14. Benthic-Pelagic Microbial Interactions and Carbon Cycling in Clearwater Lakes
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the interactions among microbiota in clearwater lakes. Field sampling and field experiments were performed to evaluate interactions among microbiota and the importance of benthic versus pelagic microbiota in terms of biomass and production. In addition, carbon cycling in an oligotrophic clearwater lake was calculated. READ MORE

15. Hydrothermal alteration of organic matter at spreading centers
Abstract : Alteration of organic matter, mainly amino acids, at sub-seafloor hydrothermal conditions has been investigated by performing laboratory experiments and by studying deep-sea sediments from hydrothermally active areas on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, northeast Pacific Ocean.Quaternary sediments from Middle Valley and the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge recovered during the Ocean Drilling Program Legs 139 and 168 have been analyzed for total hydrolyzable amino acid concentrations, individual amino acid abundances and stereochemistry in order to evaluate the effects of hydrothermal stress on the decomposition of sedimentary amino acids.
