  1. 1. Effects of Selection and Demography on DNA Polymorphism in Black Mustard (Brassica nigra)

    Author : Per Sjödin; Martin Lascoux; Ulf Lagercrantz; Mikkel Schierup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; population genetics; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : The evolution of three genes from the CONSTANS-LIKE gene family is studied in Brassica nigra. We use a combination of population genetic and phylogenetic techniques in order to assess the relative importance of selection and demography on the pattern of DNA variation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Archaeological Genetics - Approaching Human History through DNA Analysis

    Author : Evangelia Daskalaki; Anders Götherström; Mattias Jakobsson; Walther Parson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ancient DNA; pyrosequencing; molecular genetics; aDNA; neolithization; evolutionary genetics; mtDNA; viking age; archaeological genetics; genetik; evolutionsgenetik; naturvetenskap; neolitisering; vikingatid; arkeologisk genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : There are a variety of archaeological questions, which are difficult to assess by traditional archaeological methods. Similarly, there are genetic and population genetic questions about human evolution and migration that are difficult to assess by studying modern day genetic variation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Evolution of MHC Genes and MHC Gene Expression

    Author : Karin Berggren Bremdal; Hans Ellegren; Jennifer Seddon; Philip Hedrick; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; major histocompatibilty complex; dog leukocyte antigen; balancing selection; linkage disequilibrium; promoter; diabetes mellitus; Canis familiaris; Canis lupus; Erinaceus europaeus; Erinaceus concolor; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Polymorphism in coding regions and regions controlling gene expression is the major determinant of adaptive differences in natural populations. Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) possess a high level of genetic variation, which is maintained by selection over long coalescence times. READ MORE

  4. 4. Patterns and Processes of Evolution in Sundaland

    Author : Robert-Jan den Tex; Jennifer A. Leonard; Lawrence R. Heaney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : Biodiversity in the tropics is disproportionately high compared to other habitats, and also under disproportionate threat from human impact. It is necessary to understand how this diversity evolved and how it is partitioned across space in order to preserve it. READ MORE

  5. 5. Detecting Sex and Selection in Ancient Cattle Remains Using Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

    Author : Emma M Svensson; Anders Götherström; Juha Kantanen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aurochs; cattle; ancient DNA; SNP; pyrosequencing; selection; Bos taurus; Historical osteology; Historisk osteologi; Genetics; Genetik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : All contemporary taurine cattle originated some 10,000 years ago when their wild ancestor, the aurochs, was domesticated in the Near East. Although the aurochs was widespread also in Europe, there is no evidence for a local domestication. The aurochs has been extinct since 1627 and therefore little is known about its biology. READ MORE
