6. Evolution and host-specific adaptations of Legionella pneumophila
Abstract : How bacteria evolve pathogenic traits is shaped by their communities and environments. Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous in aquatic habitats, where it persists by replicating within a broad range of protozoan hosts. Using the same mechanisms, L. READ MORE

7. Learning Protein Evolution and Structure
Abstract : By analysing the structure of a protein it is possible to draw conclusions about its function. Obtaining the structure of a protein experimentally is however a time consuming and expensive process. By using evolution it is possible to infer the structure of a protein. READ MORE

8. Learning Mechatronics : In Collaborative, Experimental and International settings
Abstract : The academic subject of mechatronics has been definedpreviously in numerous publications. This study aims atanalyzing mechatronics by using categories developed within theeducational science of Didactics. READ MORE

9. Sex Chromosome Evolution in a Hermaphrodite : Genetic and phenotypic relationships between sex roles
Abstract : Sex chromosome evolution in a hermaphrodite ancestor starts with the establishment of a sex-determining region (SDR). Over time, sex-specific genes, and/or sexually antagonistic alleles will become linked to the SDR. READ MORE

10. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata
Abstract : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants.
