  1. 1. Deuterium isotopomers as a tool in environmental research

    Author : Tatiana Betson; Jürgen Schleucher; Peter Högberg; Richard Robins; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; deuterium; NMR; isotopomers; CO2 response; climate reconstruction; persistent pollutants; stable isotopes; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development and the use of quantitative deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) as a tool in two areas of environmental research: the study of long term climate-plant interactions and the source tracking of persistent organic pollutant. Long-term interactions between plants and climate will influence climate change during this century and beyond, but cannot be studied in manipulative experiments. READ MORE

  2. 2. Taxonomy and Reticulate Phylogeny of Heliosperma and Related Genera (Sileneae, Caryophyllaceae)

    Author : Božo Frajman; Bengt Oxelman; Mats Thulin; Christian Brochmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sileneae; Silene; Heliosperma; Atocion; Viscaria; taxonomy; phylogenetics; relative dating; reticulate evolution; chloroplast capture; homoploid hybridisation; BEAST; r8s; PATHd8; Prometheus; RPA2; RPB2; RPD2a; RPD2b; Balkan Peninsula; endemics; Systematics and phylogenetics; Systematik och fylogeni;

    Abstract : Heliosperma (nom. cons prop.) comprises 15—20 taxa, most of them endemic to the Balkan Peninsula. DNA sequences from the chloroplast (rps16 intron, psbE-petG spacer) and the nuclear genome (ITS and four putatively unlinked RNA polymerase genes) are used to elucidate phylogenetic relationships within Heliosperma, and its position within Sileneae. 3. 3. Carbon dynamics in spruce forest ecosystems - modelling pools and trends for Swedish conditions

    Author : Magnus Svensson; Per-Erik Jansson; Dan Berggren Kleja; Keith Paustian; KTH; []
    Keywords : boreal; climate; CoupModel; net ecosystem production; nitrogen; process-based model; soil carbon; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Carbon (C) pools and fluxes in northern hemisphere forest ecosystems are attracting increasing attention concerning predicted climate change. This thesis studied C fluxes, particularly soil C dynamics, in spruce forest ecosystems in relation to interactions between physical/biological processes using a process-based ecosystem model (CoupModel) with data for Swedish conditions. 4. 4. Phylogenomic Analysis of Vertebrate Evolution

    Author : Björn Hallström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mammals; phyogenetics; phylogenomics; vertebrates; evolution;

    Abstract : The field of phylogenomics has emerged during the last five years, as the number of fully or partially sequenced genomes has increased rapidly. Using whole genomes for phylogenetic studies greatly increases the accuracy of the trees determined, and can potentially resolve phylogenetic questions that could not be resolved bu studies using only a few gene sequences. 5. 5. Explainable Artificial Intelligence for Enhancing Transparency in Decision Support Systems

    Author : Mir Riyanul Islam; Mobyen Uddin Ahmed; Shahina Begum; Kerstin Bach; Mälardalens universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Computer Science; datavetenskap;

    Abstract : Artificial Intelligence (AI) is recognized as advanced technology that assist in decision-making processes with high accuracy and precision. However, many AI models are generally appraised as black boxes due to their reliance on complex inference mechanisms. READ MORE
