  1. 6. Endocannabinoids and N-acylethanolamines in translational pain research : from monoacylglycerol lipase to muscle pain

    Author : Nazdar Ghafouri; Christopher J Fowler; Andrew SC Rice; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Monoacylglycerol lipase; endocannabinoid; palmitoylethanolamide; N-acylethanolamines; microdialysis; chronic widespread pain; muscle pain; trapezius;

    Abstract : In the early nineties cannabinoid receptors, the main target for Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana were identified. Shortly after their endogenous ligands, N-arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide, AEA) and 2-diacylglycerol (2-AG) were characterized. READ MORE

  2. 7. Bioactive Lipids in Nociception

    Author : Anna Ermund; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : Cannabinoids; Anandamide; AM404; 2-Arachidonoylglycerol; Acetaminophen; Cyclooxygenase; Nocicieption; TRPV1;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on bioactive lipids as (1) metabolites of the widely used antipyretic and analgesic drug acetaminophen and (2) activators of the ion channel TRPV1, an important downstream target for inflammatory mediators, in the phospholipase C (PLC)/TRPV1 signaling pathway. Evidence is presented for a fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH)-dependent fatty acid conjugation of p-aminophenol, a known acetaminophen metabolite, to form the potent TRPV1 activator AM404 in the central nervous system. 3. 8. Mantle cell lymphoma : studies of predictive markers, the role of the microenvironment in disease development and identification of new potential targets for therapy

    Author : Lina Nygren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is an aggressive B cell lymphoma and accounts for 5-10 % of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). In Sweden, the incidence of NHL is 21.6 and 15.3 per 100 000 persons for men and women, respectively, which result in almost 100-200 new MCL cases per year. READ MORE

  4. 9. ANALYSIS OF NOVEL BIOMARKERS FOR UNFAVORABLE BREAST CANCER PROGNOSIS

    Author : Emman Shubbar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Ductal Carcinoma In Situ DCIS ; Primary invasive breast cancer; Biomarkers;

    Abstract : Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women, and a major cause of mortality and morbidity despite the advances in diagnosis and treatment. The main challenge remains to identify novel biomarkers in order to improve existing treatment modalities. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is considered as a direct precursor of invasive breast cancer. READ MORE

  5. 10. Molecular mechanisms underlying the actions of psychoactive drugs in the basal ganglia : focus on cannabinoids and morphine

    Author : Anders Borgkvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis is centered on the identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in the psychomotor effects of cannabinoids and morphine. These drugs share the ability of acting at the level of the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical structures involved in the control of locomotion, as well as in cognitive and motivational aspects of motor function.
