  1. 1. Synthesis of Aldehyde-Functionalized Building Blocks and Their Use for the Cyclization of Peptides : Applications to Angiotensin II

    Author : Petra Johannesson; Rob M. J. Liskamp; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Synthesis; Aldehyde; Cyclization; Peptide; Angiotensin II; Ang II; Bioactive Conformation; Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis; Dimethyl Acetal; Farmaceutisk kemi; Syntes; Aldehyd; Cyklisering; Peptid; Bioaktiv konformation; Fast-fas peptidsyntes; Dimetylacetal; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Organic Pharmaceutical Chemistry; organisk farmaceutisk kemi;

    Abstract : This study addresses the issue of how to convert peptides into drug-like non- peptides with retained biological activities at peptide receptors. Angiotensin II (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe, Ang II) was used as a model peptide. READ MORE

  2. 2. Identifying Risk Genes for Cervical Cancer : Using Affected Sib-Pairs and Case-Control Materials from Sweden

    Author : Malin Engelmark; Ulf Gyllensten; Dan Holmberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Cervical cancer; HPV; Affected sib-pairs; HLA; Fas; Genomewide scan; 9q32; TSCOT; Medicin;

    Abstract : Cervical cancer is a multifactorial disease. Infection by oncogenic types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major environmental risk factor and host genetic susceptibility also influences disease development. The aim of this thesis is to identify and analyse risk genes involved in the genetic predisposition to cervical carcinoma. READ MORE

  3. 3. Endogenous proteins as markers of glomerular function and dysfunction

    Author : Jan Tencer; Njurmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glomerular filter; amyloidosis; glomerulonephritis; glomerular disease; proteins; proteinuria; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : Plasma and urine concentrations of endogenous proteins are frequently used in the diagnosis of kidney diseases and in studies of glomerular filter function. The main issues addressed in these studies were: storage of urine samples for subsequent protein analysis, use of protein concentrations in urine and in plasma in health and as markers of glomerular diseases, and the application of renal plasma-to-urine clearance of endogenous proteins in estimating the size-selectivity properties of the glomerular capillary wall. 4. 4. Targeting Mycobacterium tuberculosis Proteins: Structure and Function Studies of Five Essential Proteins

    Author : Adrian Suarez Covarrubias; Sherry Mowbray; Torsten Unge; Pedro Alzari; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell and molecular biology; carbonic anhydrase; threonine synthase; FAS II; Rv0636; Rv1284; Rv1295; Rv3588c; Rv3778c; X-ray crystallography; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Mycobacterium tuberculosis;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the target selection, cloning, expression, purification, crystallization, structure and biochemical characterization of five essential Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) proteins. The search for drugs against the causal agent of tuberculosis is urgently needed and the targeting of essential genes is necessary to fulfill this goal. READ MORE

  5. 5. Tissue kallikrein: pathophysiological role in acute pancreatitis

    Author : Mats Bläckberg; Helsingborg Kliniska Vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acute pancreatitis; aprotinin; alpha-macroglobulin; alpha1-proteinase inhibitor; turn over; kinin B2 receptor; kallidin; bradykinin; Tissue kallikrein; kallistatin; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : Tissue kallikrein releases pharmacollogically highly active kinins from kininogen. Many other enzymes may also release kinins. The aim of the study was to clarify the pathophysiological role of tissue kallikrein in acute pancreatitis. Two sensitive and specific radioimmunoassays for porcine and human tissue kallikrein were developed. READ MORE
